The Velocity Status Run Master thread

sorry...mileage run or SR...not mattress run...although a mattress run does sound tempting...but that then means a new lot of rules to learn...and I'm just learning this VA FF one...

sorry for the confusion.....see , we learn new things everyday..

So back to the topic...sorry for the little side note

Just checking the flights to OOL from Syd.......they have jumped ..like way up on the days I could have done SYD-MEL-OOL-MEL-SYD FOR $180...they are around $460 +...

Hopefully they will drop again...

anyone had success getting a cheap MR this week???

I can smell gold.......

I was slack on booking my trip and all of them seem to have gone up dramatically of late like you say. However I found one this weekend for at least one of the legs. I'm doing SYD->OOL->MEL on Saturday to net me 50 SC (2 of us flying) and then using my reward points to get me back home direct on Sunday which should line me up to tick over to platinum when I fly to Brisbane next weekend.

sounds great....I really did enjoy the run....

Now I'm thinking outside the square....and I haven't really thought it thru....
but as VA is a ANZ partner...and earn SC's (I have enough flight 's)
what if I got to NZ and did a few cheap small hops and then flew back on anz as I have air new zealand points to burn before they expire...so I can get there and back for free (except taxes i guess).....any suggestions or am I just plain wrong and barking up the wrong tree....

just checked wellington to Auckland is 1 hr flts, leaving every hr ish and cost $48 nzd.....

Yeah, running up and down NZ is something I've been thinking about trying. Need to really look into it. Would love to hear your opinions if you do go ahead with it.

So im pricing things up...I have 980 air new zealand dollars to burn so i can get there and back ok....

looking at flying into Auckland late fri night after work june 27, using points to stay at hotel near airport, then start a full day run june 28 akl-wel etc....most flights are $48 with no baggage...1 hr long...
Does anyone know for sure that each flight will get 10 SC's....then after 5 flights or so hit the hotel and fly out sunday June 29 in the arvo.....

Any suggestions?? hints, Tips??? Phone number of a good Mental health professional??

Shame my DH is a horrible flyer, otherwise we could do this in 3 flights and have a lovely weekend in NZ instead of me doing all of them ....I must really love him to do all this for his lounge access...:)

NOTE: I hope your seeing my Commitment to GOLD Velocity :)

Someone on Ozbargain posted the following:
SIN-AUH-CDG
DUB-AUH-MEL

for $600 in Y

This is almost status run worthy. By my calculations it would net 130 SCs, so $4.61 per SC which is a fairly good deal and the big benefit of this status run is that it is actually going somewhere you want to go! (nothing against ASP. TSV and NTL!)

It's 17,848 miles of travel, so as discount Y (these flights book into U and E classes), that would be 8,924 base points, with the 25, 50 and 100% status bonuses (so 17,848 points for a WP).

There is obviously the cost of getting to SIN to consider but certainly a more interesting SC run than domestic! If you leave SIN on a Monday you may be fortunate enough to be routed via KUL (on MH) with KUL-AUH being on the VA777. In Y, VA long-haul will be much better than EY Y (for example 3-3-3 vs 3-4-3).

I would struggle with the overnight flights in Y but where I could break the trip up and just do day flights I would seriously consider this!

(EDIT: Even better value is SIN-AUH-CDG//DUB-AUH-PER-ADL for $603 which would net 150 SCs, so $4.02 per SC!)

Most Domestic NZ flights will earn NOTHING on VA .... needs to be the higher fares to earn

can you tell me what fares would get the SC's....graba seat, grabaseat + bag, smart saver, flexi plus....

oh dear..

** oops - originally copied the FF points earn table

This is the one you really want:

https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Info/StatusEarnFareClass/index.htm

If your intended flight/seat uses one of the listed fare classes then you should be right to earn SC's. Pay particular attention to NZ domestic and VA codesharing complexity which is explained in the fine print at the bottom of the page.

so if i read this right...grab a seat is discount economy and can still earn SC's...

OK, maybe I need to ring Virgin ...or air new zealand???

so possibly grab a seat is one of these...

Discount Economy fare classes U, M, S, T, Q, V, N, E are ineligible for Status Credit earn when travelling on domestic connections within New Zealand on Virgin Australia codeshare services operated by Air New Zealand.

So does that mean it has to be a NZ flight number...ok I'm confusing myself now...

You will probably need to find out the fare class to then make sense of the table, this bit: "Air New Zealand - Domestic New Zealand: Q, H, M" - all other things being equal, it appears that if your fare class was Q, H or M you'd be ok and should earn, presumably as per the table here:

Earning Status Credits | Velocity Frequent Flyer

So long as none of the myriad exclusions listed apply to the fare.

Just be aware that there won't be a blanket answer to this, as discount economy fares are probably available in a myriad different classes... there will be super discounted, and discounted, all called (probably) the same thing, but the pricing will vary. So, dependent upon when you buy your discount Y ticket you might get a "H" or a "Q" or something else that might not earn. One has to be particularly careful of this when doing the booking ... it might mean ringing up to complete the booking, or watching one of the GDS trackers (like expertflyer or whatever) to watch availability of certain classes.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the help.....Its a crazy complicated system this FF game....not for the faint of heart..

I just asked DH if he wanted to come to NZ on a mileage run, he said he'd rather get all his molars pulled.....

yep!

just got a tweet from ANZ
best to give our team a call at 0800 737 000 for assistance with this.

I just found this tool

Just wondering if someone can double check the maths for me...to avoid another #silvergate2014

each sector on saver lite gets 10 SC's....

I am currently SILVER
450 SC
4 eligible flights

so does the maths look ok??? I'm a librarian not an accountant.

Also each flight cost $175 so that's 875 base points plus 50% as silver = 1313?

Now does the Gold kick in after my 19 July PMQ-BNE LEG.....OR is it after I complete the entire journey ending in SYD on July 20???

And the most important question...when do I get my personalized luggage tag???

PS: thanks QF WP for the correct code...

According to post #1054, plus your flights (all look correct on the SC's), you'll be a newly minted Gold in about 2-3 days after flight dates (so your account won't update in time to reflect your July 19 flight, for your flight on July 20). Enjoy Row 3 & 4 :D

Thanks mate....now to work out how to link my LAX Hilton accom in Sept to my account.....
