The Velocity Status Run Master thread

I'm not aware of VA allowing to purchase additional luggage, I know when you have status you are given extra allowance.

It is a bug, my trip in March has now just changed (due to work opportunity) to MEL-BNE-SIN-BKK-SIN-MNL-SIN-BKK-SIN-SYD-MEL, when I arrive in BKK I will pretty much turn around and head straight back to SIN, enough time to shower in lounge at BKK

VA shorthaul only counts as routes that VA metal flies to I believe?

And would VA luggage entitlements apply or SQ? I know SQ allow 30kg instead of VA's 23kg

Yeah, it's a bit confusing, because the definitions state that International Long Haul are for flights to AUH or LAX only, but then SQ et al are mentioned under International Long Haul baggage definitions. Why am I not surprised that VA make it complicated.

No real surprises there. As WP I can honestly say I've never even given luggage limits a 2nd glance. A full suitcase for me is around 20kgs and I only ever take I checked bag and 1 carry on

just wanted to check if you use points to purchase virgin flights does it get credited with SC and sector?

Just thought I'd post this BEFORE I pay the money and do something foolish (ie miss out on SC or a clever trick)

Me and the SO are going to do a quick hol: SYD-WLG /overland /AKL-SYD the week after easter (~30th March), looking to use the 2FOR1 from our Virgin High Flyer Cards so it should cost around $500 or so (the 2FOR1 saving $500). She also needs 200SC to retain Gold.

-will we get SC for the 'free' ticket?
-is there a quick routing cheat we can add to get more SC - most I've seen seem to go via BNE and make it a 7hour trip!

The SO doesnt want to spend all day in the air (I know!) and I could persuade her to accept a bit of extra time for 'status run fun'....

Ta!

I'm not 100% sure what the T&C's are on the 2FOR1 deals, would be worthwhile checking before booking otherwise cost you SC. I guess it would depend on what fare bucket the flights booked into, if it books into discount economy then you're only looking at 15SC each way, even with family pooling you will still be short 140SC

What is your status?

As a reference point, the free flight on Amex Velocity Platinum card does NOT earn SCs. I don't have a Virgin High Flyer card however, so can't particularly comment on it. The Amex T&Cs specifically states that Points are not awarded for travel on these flights (... it states points, but neither points nor SCs are awarded). Does it mention anything specifically in the Virgin High Flyer T&Cs?

Im gold.. will have to hunt the ts and cs down...!ta

Even with family pooling you won't earn enough SC for SO to retain gold.

I would also be surprised if these deals did earn points & SC

Are you sure you can do an international flight on the 2 for 1 deal?

If you really want SCs, consider doing these flights in business class - at least in one direction. 60SCs each way, I think $6xx on the current sale...

In the past we certainly received equal SC's for each Pax however I think (happy to be corrected) that the FFP were halved depending on the level and fare class.

Can confirm what others have mentioned:

-You do get SC's and points for two41 deal, the points earn is low as it is 5 x $ spent on fares
-You cannot use two41 for anything other than domestic saver deals
-much better SC earn by going in J., If you can go via MEL then your TT leg goes into the next distance category, IE in J you get 80sc instead of 60, plus the MEL leg earn
-W is not a bad option either, not quite the earn of J but not quite the price either. O/W via AKL on 30th is $545 for 55 sc.

The only way you will get to your target without doing 7 hour flights (IE flying direct) is for both of you to go both ways in J. As you were looking at two41 deals to start, is $3400 in your budget?

thanks - think I'm going to look at J through MEL then and maybe use the 2FOR1 for something else once I've got the SCs then... assume there's no benefit booking through another carrier or anything fancy - just through VA and take pot luck on the metal?
