The view from my "office"

So today started out with lots of snow around (although the snowing has stopped) but continued to melt as the day went on. Lower Black Forest region, and then back to the Upper Black Forest region.

First, Kloster St. Trudpert in Münstertal.

Then it was on to Staufen, where each Christmas tree had different handmade decorations made by the local school children.

They got pretty creative, these ones were made out of everyone's favourites from 2020-2022, face masks!

And......... we stopped in for some Black Forest Gateau, you have to after all - it's named after the region ;)

Then it was off to Freiburg, I'd say that's probably the largest Christmas market in the Black Forest region.

Finally, we ended up in Gengenbach - it had a pretty cool ceremony starting at 6pm for the opening of the next days advent calendar window - the show went on for about 20 minutes! Singing, dancing, etc. It was completely rammed, although I got photos while it was a bit quieter.

we had already paid for Salzburg so I sucked it up and we took the most expensive taxi ride of our life 165€. But at least we are back on track 😁

The taxi ride was extremely scenic and the driver spoke adequate English. I am
not going to complain too much as the news shows disruptions all around Southern Europe. We were lucky to be able to find an alternative and get to our next destination.

Think that is one of the WT.... ( what the heck) moments @OZDUCK
Just go with it, spend the € and have a pretty good time.
If it makes you feel better, we blew €580 to get from Lisbon to Porto in September!

Wow this is always my favourite thread on AFF.

So many wonderful places and fond memories of our visits over the years. Brings joy to my soul. Spent 5 days in Cinque Terre 12 years ago staying in Manarola. 5 nights in the Back Forest area and yes @Flashback we stayed in Gengenbach, they had a wonderful medieval festival complete with the pig on the spit. Salzburg such a gorgeous area worth the taxi ride!

I have never visited these places in winter time, But it is on my wish list!

I was sure we had made the right decision yesterday and absolutely convinced so today. Munich HBF is operating at a snails pace and no long distance trains are running to Salzburg. We would almost certainly still be stuck in Prien for another day. As you said you just have to go with it - someday I hope to get to Porto. And I remember that your unplanned excursion was actually a
Very enjoyable part of your holiday.

Alright, erm, sorry in advance @VPS you might want to look away.

We had a wander around Gengenbach and came across this lovely church - Gemeindehaus St. Marien.

A rather quaint town to wander around, lots of nooks and crannies.

Once we departed Gengenbach we started off in Baden-Baden, a little spa town (still in the Black Forest region).

Finally today we ended up in Karlsruhe - a friend of mine who lived in Germany for a few years said "There? Really? It's more of an industrial town!". Well, this ended up being the wildcard that really paid dividends.
