The view from my "office"

re: The view from my "office"

I never get to go anywhere interesting...

This is Sydney Vivid from the hotel, and then walking around.

The circular Quay area lights this year are as good or better than ever but the crowds seem to be even more ridiculous. We've been each year but it's getting to the point where there are so many people it's hard to enjoy.

Banff National Park, more precisely Emerald Lake (yesterday) and Moraine Lake. We also visited Lake Louise but the monstrosity that is Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise meant this was our least favourite location today. Bow Valley Parkway, including Johnston Canyon, is absolutely stunning and the crowds were not too bad - though we are certainly not alone!

Hot work seeing the Theatre at Hierapolis:

But a swim amongst scattered marble columns in prospect at the adjacent Pamukkale pool:

That is why you need to stay in the Fairmont.A wonderful view without the Fairmont in it.
And of course being able to walk around it before and after all those loud day trippers are present.;):p:lol:

My office ahead of my first flight in 'the Business'. The view is a definite improvement over the old dungeon.

re: The view from my "office"

There is more to this office view than meets the eye:

Art.jpg

Starting with the columns in the foreground - all that remains, alas, of the Temple of Artemis, built in ~300BC and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was described by Antipater of Sidon, who compiled the list, as follows:

I have set eyes on the wall of lofty Babylon on which is a road for chariots, and the statue of Zeus by the Alpheus, and the hanging gardens, and the Colossus of the Sun, and the huge labour of the high pyramids, and the vast tomb of Mausolus; but when I saw the house of Artemis that mounted to the clouds, those other marvels lost their brilliancy, and I said, 'Lo, apart from Olympus, the Sun never looked on aught so grand.'

Going clockwise from the smaller tower in the foreground, the building with the dome is the Mosque of Isa Bey, built 1374 and still operating.

Immediately 'above' that, the crenulated castle is Selcuk Castle, last re-built in the '500s (and recently renovated).

Then, to the right, from the number of thin (looking) pillars right across the flat area to the gate towers on the far right, are the remains of the Basilica of St John, built in the 500s and said to be the burial place of the Apostle John. John brought the Virgin Mary to Ephesus after Christ's crucifixion and she reputedly is buried near Ephesus which is nearby.

Not bad for a 600m stretch! All just outside Selcuk, Turkey - my hotel just to the right of the Basilica gate towers on the right.
