Honestly, would it kill whoever opens the bottles to check?

Well, for one thing, the staff are not permitted to let their lips touch the alcoholic beverages; for another, many of them wouldn't know - especially if the corking was not overt. The much-vaunted 'sommelier in the sky' by QF a few years back was, like a lot of their stuff, a crock. I only ever met one FA who had done it.

I remember years ago being on a domestic flight from the east to PER, and a few rows from the front (yes, yes, what was I thinking - must have been a late UPG) and I noticed one of the pax further forward grimace when he tasted the glass of chardonnay he'd been served for the after takeoff drink. But he said nothing.

The FA got to me, I chose the chardy and just about choked. It was one of the worst instances of corked wine I've ever experienced. I pointed it out to the FA and her reaction had an overtone of 'who is this w@nker?'. I don't think she even knew what 'corked' meant. I think I had to end up saying 'this wine is off'. Anyway, she took it back to the galley, there was a flurry of discussion, then suddenly the FAs, as a posse, were sweeping around the cabin recalling all the glasses of chardy for replacement.

Whether they tasted, or just smelt (which would have been enough), the wine to suddenly realise it was badly off, I do not know.

No wonder car enthusiasts love to visit there. Though the pink seems strangely popular.

Its just a pity that a lot of them have VW , Great Wall or Hyundai motors in them. Not that many with original motors.
