In Segovia,

Jose Maria Restaurante José María de Segovia can’t recommend more highly. Went there twice.

The one near the aqueduct Meson Candido Meson de Cándido and there are nice bars in the street.

Drinks and snacks in Plaza Major, we liked Juan Bravo – Fonda Ilustrada

We stayed at Reservar Hotel Eurostars Convento Capuchinos en Segovia for three nights. Excellent location and good hotel with easy parking (and lift to hotel).

Remember it’s not possible to eat before 8, and in reality Spanish don’t arrive at restaurants before 10.

Sorry, I should have been more specific but you have provided a lot of useful information so thank you. I still can't make my mind up whether to go south or north of Madrid for a week or so but will at least do a one day trip to Segovia.

I drove back to PER from near Kalgoorlie today. Howling NNE wind was whipping up a dust storm like I've never seen across the WA cereal belt as the monster high that's been sitting over the country for some time is giving way to a major cold front. Hopefully the rain will spread over the whole SW ag. region.

It’s hard to leave this place.

I'd suggest doing a little more than a a one day trip to Segovia (if you meant just a day trip from Madrid). Heading N, San Sebastian is the goods. Food is rubbish, though .

The office this week was about 150 km SSW of Kalgoorlie (that's in WA...) in what approximates The Middle Of Nowhere in the Western Woodland.



Dawn and my my son catching a faint one-bar signal on a semblance of a hill. (We did have a satphone for emergencies).



My first inclination, owing to the colour, was to say that this is Salmon Gum (Eucalyptus salmonophloia), but I can't be positive about that. It is the right region for the species. Maybe there's a particularly dark variant in this locality. Anyway, it was very pretty.

The day before yesterday: Bratislava.

I have very similar photos of the castle and the main street from my previous visit in 1968, but I think the castle was not so white. I will have to check that when I come home.

The third photo is in the post office, where old communist attitudes still seem to prevail. I just needed a stamp. Take a ticket and wait for your number to be called. There were 17 people in front of us. Two desks were allocated to simple postal tasks. Every now and then someone would be called to one of the desks. Each of them had a few items to post. Every time after dealing with a customer the postal worker would sit there, staring at her screen for an inordinate amount of time before calling the next customer. After nearly half an hour there were still 11 people in front of us and we gave up. That was more than enough time to admire the beautiful skylight.

How'd you find it? We recently stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Madrid Prado and it was a fantastic property, your your standard DT. More of a boutique hotel.
