The view from my "office"

Every time I travel I want to write a trip report, but then nothing comes of it. The main hurdle is having to use my iPhone. I can’t type fast enough and that is frustrating. The last few trips I have posted snippets in this thread as a surrogate.

This thread is a nice little sugar hit but even brilliant pics and post quickly disappear in the "noise"
A TR however remains for your grandkids and their grandkids to read.
I have had some fun travelling and could have written some entertaining stuff… mea culpa
Don't be like me .. write.. :)

I fell off one when I was four when I was swinging around. I can still remember it vividly. I fell on to the handle. So much blood. I refuse to have one anymore and haven’t for the last 40 years.

We had to make our own fun back then. These days, they charge money for adventure activities like that! ;)

Indeed. Playing cricket in the street. I think the Doctor charged heaps for my medical incident. Emergency call out etc etc.

Fair enough. I'll be keeping an eye out for your snippets.
Have fun.

I can highly recommend spending the time. I’ve written a few and yes it is a time consuming thing to do but it’s a diary for me to read later on - thoughts, little incidences that you forget about etc than stay online to read - whenever.

I also construct the bulk of mine, apart from snippets from my phone on-the-go, as a Word document for that reason. I keep it filed on my PC for accessibility, and use it as the source for my posts as I build the TR. It also allows grouping photos and using the Snipping Tool to create single, much smaller size images, for faster loading.

I don’t take a PC when I travel. iPad and phone only. If I don’t post on the trip then it’s unlikely to be done once I get back. Well, not even unlikely, it won’t be! It’s as live as possible.

@JohnM and @RooFlyer - you both have multiple trips in your signature. How did you do this?

I'm the opposite. I also don't carry a PC while travelling - only my iPhone and iPad. But the bulk of the TR using photos from my camera is done after I return - although interruptions do make for sometimes lengthy pauses (I'm trying to get back to my 2018 RTW right now before three days in the bush this coming week). I am determined to finish it before heading to Sudan in mid-November as that will generate another TR.

As for the links, you also have several in your signature line, so I guess fundamentally no different. Are you having trouble fitting more in?

I use TinyURL to shrink the (very long) AFF URL to a very short URL (there are other URL-shrinkers, including one from Google, I think) I save the shortcut to my desktop then rename it from the TinyURL code using the shortcut editor and just insert the shortcut in the list. Font editing is easily done in the signature-editor.

If you right-click on a signature element and select 'Inspect', you'll see the HTML coding.

One example of where new does not beat old!

The galv. ones were the most fantastic devices ever made. Not only could they keep kids entertained for hours, but the galv peg basket was the most wonderful invention for knocking out baby teeth of the newly active brigade, rivaled only by the equally fabulous totem tennis (whose hard plastic ball was akin to a flying house brick). More over, and hard to comprehend, but a pleasing sideline of the ol' Hills Hoist, was that they also dried clothes!

Absolutely bloody marvelous! :D

Playing rugby in the backyard (in aussie rules territory) as a 12 year old, ran head first into the ol' galvanised Hills Hoist! My head still hurts 40 years later...

Some think it explains my odd behaviour at times,:D

Yup. I’d like more. The tinyurl seems to be what I need.

Ok. Back to Office Views. Before JT gets me.

Ha ha. Exactly the sight at chez RooFlyer today. :)

For the most part, that won't be us when we arrive back later today! One of the good things about using vacation rentals during the trip, the ability to do laundry as/when needed and pack light.

I'd suggest if it's crowded, everybody should stand? (or alternatively, don't take a dump when people are watching )

I eventually worked it out I think. There are fold out seats near the doors and I guess you are not supposed to use them when it is busy. Why the middle figure has lost its arms I don't know.

I think I can just sneak this in. You don't need a Tiny URL with the 'new' AFF site. There used to be a limit to the number of characters you could use, but the limit is no longer there, or has been increased greatly.

Go to the TR you want to cite and copy the URL of it. Then, in the signature edit area (click on your avatar at the top of the AFF page and choose signature), just write the name of the trip report,, highlight it, then use the link function in the toolbar to insert the copied URL over the text. Rinse and repeat.

I always take my laptop on trips - a hangover from when I was always 'on call' to my client. I didn't on my recent Siberia trip and this prevented me from using my Sony pics in the progressive TR, which was done on my phone. So now, like JohnM, I'm going back and posting some 'best of' pics from the Sony now I'm back home and have my laptop.

Now I have 2 laptops (new, flash one and my older one, now a spare), I'll always take the older laptop and do the TRs on-the-fly again. If it karks it or is nicked, no biggie.
