Auschwitz II-Birkenau Concentation Camp, Brzezinka - a very sad and poignant place to visit View attachment 190162
I have been to two Concentration Camps - Dachau when I was 22 and too young and stupid to fully take it all in. And then Buchenwald nearly 40 years later - when the true horrors really hit me hard. I will not go to one again.
I was posted to the BAOR in the early 90's and have almost the same photo as @kpc however it is one of those old fashion photos (prints). @OZDUCK I have also been be to Buchenwald, in the early to 90's it was very well persevered, largely untouched as the location is in the former east and was an experience I still remember 25 years on, also have a number of those old fashion photos (prints). The third area I spent time in was Bergen and the camp was long gone. It would be interesting to go back after 25 years to see what, if anything has changed.

Joshua Tree National Park, the first of many on this trip.....! Getting the annual parks pass ($80 USD) was very quick and easy, quite surprised really! Just pay at the gate as you go through, they give you a credit card sized card that you sign the back of and job done.

Buchenwald is still very well preserved, at least it was in in 2013. The displays are excellently curated and no attempt is made to hid or lessen what occurred there.

I think what made it even worse was that we had just spent a couple of great days in Weimar - which to quote was " a focal point of the German Enlightenment". The Bauhaus movement was also founded there. We had wandered past memorials to Goethe and Schiller and strolled through the gorgeous "Park on the Ilm" where Goethe's Gartenhaus still stands. Yet this obscene place was built right on its doorstep, just 8 km from the the centre of the city. There was plenty of testimony from the former inmates about how they had been marched through the centre of the city and been subject to abuse and worse by the locals who knew exactly what was happening there. It was just so different to the Germany and Germans I really had grown to like and it shook me up.

Leaving PSP tomorrow (was supposed to be today, but Mrs FB is too sick to travel), our friends have a 6.10am flight...... fortunately we will just wake up and go when we please as we can leave their key with the neighbour. Phew!
