The view from my "office"

Wifi is very slow to load photos (suspect doesn’t cope well with file size) but today was the tourist iconic Flam railway with an early start of 9.15am. Lovely weather and spectacular scenery though the station of Myrdal where the train turns round was somewhat underwhelming as it is a working station with the train to Bergen departing while we were there.

Last day in Hua Hin this morning, stayed at the Laksasubha Resort. Rustic old school (not Marriott or Accord), fantastic place to stay and great staff. Still monsoonal ATM but makes for a great sunrise over breakfast. (The minced pork noodle breakfast soup was next level good)

Checked out, grabbed a Grab then caught a Thai AirAsia X up to Chiang Mai. Paid the not much extra for the hour flight flight; preordered meal, row 1 to ourselves etc. The cabin crew efficiency was something else.

Now staying at the Pingviman Hotel in Old Town, Chiang Mai for a few nights.

Fun fact: Chiang Mai was founded in 1296.

Be interested to hear of your experiences in Hua Hin @Wing Nut
Hey Fly, Hua Hin was great, we stayed three nights which was enough for us. As you'd appreciate my experiences and yours could differ but here goes; the Laksasubha was a really good place to stay. Central, beach front resort, small horizon pool overlooking the beach, 2 for 1 happy two hours, sit on the beach with a Chang, a lot to like. Stayed in a standard hotel room, had all the essentials including umbrellas given it's still the end of the wet season. Most days 'feels like' temp was in the high 30's and humid.

Getting there is easy. Booked an Everest through Hua Hin Taxi that picked us up from our hotel in BK for the three odd hour drive to HH for 2500 baht or AU$125. Highly recommend for transfers.

In HH, we didn't do any tours instead choosing to stay local and mooch about. The idea of getting up early, driving for two hours then being herded on and off busses is not appealing. We like to do things at our pace. There are plenty of markets, bars and food stalls plus beach time that kept us occupied. Hired a Waverider for 30 min for $1500 (AU$75) just next to the resort for a quick blat in the Gulf of Thailand. Given we stayed close, getting around was easy. The odd Grab but mainly used Tuk Tuks. 100 baht seemed to be the set fare, could have haggled but it's not even $5. Happy to pay that to get back to the resort!

There are a lot of single Pommie expats as well as a few Aussies so that seedy element is present but not in your face. Let's just say the Walking Street (which isn't far from the resort) is "interesting" as we found out. At no time did we feel unsafe and we walked through a few back streets and alleys as well. Oh, there are a couple of girly bars that open a night pretty much out front of the resort.

All up, we enjoyed Hua Hin and happy to go back whenever that is but there's much to see and do!

Here's a couple more pics:

Outside the hotel. Plenty of coffee spots etc IMG_20241012_182527559.jpg
Cicada night markets are worth a visit. Tamarind food market was manic and gave it a miss.

Hua Hin night markets...

Oh, the photo link in your post was taken from our hotel room in BK. The Sheraton Royal Orchid is in a great location.

Thanks for that information @Wing Nut
Ticks quite a few boxes, been a  very long time (50 years nearly) since BKK, think the 3 hours from there to HH is what put Mr Flyfrequently off the idea - but we are keen to head back to Koh Samui going via Singapore.
Again lots of info and thanks for the photos.
