The WP shadow

I've just taken out the free membership to Expert Flyer and thought I'd check the status of the Y seats next to me on my next 2 flights (HKG-BNE and return).

I'm SG so I've chosen seats in row 25 (a window for the overnight flight to BNE and an aisle for the day flight back to HKG). On the QF site, both seats next to me are showing as available and the only seats I can't choose are the WP reserved rows in front of me and those selected by other pax throughout the cabin.

EF shows the seat next to me on both flights as blocked (as well as a whole heap of others in the Y cabin). Is this a shadow, or is it blocked because EF doesn't know my FF status but does know that row 25 is reserved for premium FF on these particular flights (QF98/97)?

OK, I've answered my own question. I didn't realise I could enter my QFF # into EF. Now that I have, it shows the seats next me as available, therefore no shadow.

I think that probably means that the 'shadow' I thought I had on my last flight to HKG was not a shadow and was, in fact, just luck that nobody was sitting next to me.

I've been very lucky in that I probably have the seat open next to me 80% of the time. But I do fly out of peak (10am Monday and 2pm Wednesday) - that seems to help.

Had a 'Sapphire shadow' next to me in first-row Y ('A' side) on my first flights as SG on CX - CX260 and CX139 CDG-HKG-SYD. On both flights the centre bulkhead of 4 was occupied by 1x MPC Diamond.

Call it luck if you like, I firmly believe it was my PS shadow   Hoping for more sunny flights as SG...

Happy to report more sunny flights (with Golden shadows) :p
QF98 last Tuesday/Wed had 3B vacant for me as did 976 later in the day.
KA811 had 16 in the 30 seat J cabin with everybody paired up  - that lasted about 10 seconds after the seatbelt light went out and 11B vaporised into a shadow :D
Happy days (/nights)!
3B/3B/11B all showing vacant for the return as is 30B on QF130 in Jan (J upgrade still pending)

I have been doing a lot of Y class travel from SYD to BKK. It is a day flight so happy to do it in Y and save points for J class in the other direction. My treatment as a WP in Y varies greatly depending on the crew. Sometimes they treat me well, sometimes they treat me no differently. Same too with the shadow. On the most recent flight I was in my preferred Y seat (24a). Window one from the front in seat if 2. Someone was next to me in b. After take off I noticed number of customers stretched out in Eco-business (four centre seats with one passenger). No three shadows for me on that flight.

I'm SG and had a shadow on both legs of a PER-MEL return trip a few weekends back. Changed seats a few times before check in, each time there would be a spare seat showing next to me in the on-line seat selection but checkmytrip would show the seat next to me as occupied. The vacant middle seat in Row 13 of the 737 on the return flight was especially good. Maybe not too many WP on the flights I guess?

WP Shadow worked beautifully at the Pink Concert the other night. I had a spare seat next to me, when the rest of the stadium seemed chockers!!!
On a serious note, two shadows on both Dom flights from Mel - Syd return today.

I wish we could take credit for that!

Happy Friday, and have a great weekend. :)

It is great to know I can still get a shadow on full or oversold flights.

What a great benefit to have as a Qantas Platinum....

I don't think I ever have a shadow. I'm not even sure how to tell if I do have one. Having said that, when I'm out in the sun I don't have a shadow either or reflection in the mirror sometimes. I have probably watched too many Zombie films.

Just as long as you can open automatic doors! ;)

Personal note of thanks to the nice WP seated in 17A on QF 486 SYD-OOL earlier today.
I know he must have been high status because when I looked at my seat this morning the three seats were showing full.
Get on board this afternoon and find a nice gap between us.
Needless to say, I allowed him to put his iPad on the spare seat on account of it being definitely his status and not mine.

I did appreciate the extra elbow room. :)

Why would a WP take row 17?? Maybe middle seat person cancelled??

I'm not sure what status one has to be to get a shadow, but as WP I appear to gain the benefit of someone else's shadow about T-48. I can see the middle seat blocked on EF so I slide into the free window beside.

Of course QF often fill row 4 middle seats with lowly SGs and no status pax at the last minute removing all benefit onboard ;)

It's about 50/50 of keeping the shadow depending on flight loads and irregular ops.

I had a shadow in J recently, then one of the FC upgraded her friend in Y.
At least he was a pleasant guy so we had a great conversation for the next 3 hours or so.

Do they do a shadow in J? I thought it only applied to Y, where the extra space is appreciated. Not really necessary in J, or cost effective for QF.

Expertflyer has shown plenty of X's next to me when travelling J.......I've just assumed that's a shadow thingy. FWIW many of them have morphed into a spare seat on boarding.
