That's tea, with England still well and truly on top having sent Australia in. But with Haddin and Johnson looking good, there's just a sliver of hope for Australian fans that they can get the total up to something vaguely competitive.
So true.....6/179 with Haddin on 52 and Johnson on 25.

Off home for me

The Australian selectors are going to get the sack and then we will have a cricket team again.
Hard to see that the Chairman of Selectors getting the chop when he's the son in law of an Australian legend :( [Bobby Simpson].

Being the son in law of a legend does not make you a legend. :-|

One interesting comment is that we have 3 openers as selectors. Andrew Hilditch, David Boon and Jamie Cox.

One of them had a decent international cricket career. Hilditch has been chairman of selectors and it is time to go. Give Chappell a chance to do something....

No it doesn't make him a legend, but politics plays a big part.

Damn, Haddin out for 53, 7/189

Harris misses his 3rd golden duck, thankfully

But he gets bowled by Anderson for 3, so Harris has a Test average of 1.

Johnson on 43

The only miracle of this is that it's possibly a bowler's pitch (and not a batsman's).

The compass of life though points to England's victory for this one. Oh this is going to be severely embarrassing. But perhaps soccer might be able to garner more ratings in the fading wake of cricket (too little too late...)

Australia all out for 268!

That is a lot better than I expected at 5/69. Good chance of a result now and the draw looks only possible if the weather intervenes.

Australia in with a chance if they can get some early wickets today.

Goodbye Ashes....goodbye Ponting as Test Capatin and possibly as a batsman esp. if he fails with the bat again*

I have to agree kpc (also a die hard cricket player from the 70's and subsequent cricket tragic).

The time has come for a changing of the old guard and ushering in of a new direction for Australian cricket. Yes, that might mean that we aren't as competitive for a season or two, but it could be worse.

Not a good day for Australia.

England 0 for 29 and to be honest the Australian bowlers don't look like getting wickets. :(

A touch harsh. I though the Australian bowlers looked sharp. there was a couple of near misses too. The luck seems to be with England at the moment. I guess that is sport!

Just read a very interesting opinion piece on Australian cricket by Latham in the financial review. Page 54 if anyone can get a copy.

Some quotes based on my recall of the piece:
'Australian cricket is dead and the ashes are interred in the McMansions of the suburbs'

'There will never be another bradman there will also never be another chappell, boon or [I can't remember]'

'no boy these days will waste their spare time on a bradman-esque training program they would rather play playstation or xbox'

Also he was a bit bolshie. But I enjoyed that as well.

As a die hard Australian cricket fan from 1973 (I used to watch all games televised and listen to ABC radio on all overseas tours) and who lived through the tough times in the 80's I found todays performance hard to understand and totally disappointing.

Most experts said they could not understand why England had sent Australia in to bat. There was nothing in the wicket. Have a look at the Australian dismissals. Most of them got themselves out although admittedly it was excellent bowling from England.

Tomorrow will be the key day of the match. If England can bat out the day and then get to 350 or 400 then Australia is going to be in trouble. If Swann can get 2 wickets on a first day Waca pitch what is he going to do on days 3-5?

Perhaps it is time Australia scheduled some games against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh so some batsmen can get triple centuries and boost their averages and bowlers can aim for 5 wickets in an innings....

That’s exactly it, they could drop their cough players now, drop their abysmal captain who’s had his time, and focus on their up and coming players, and perhaps lose a few matches but gain experience… or keep the team as it is and just lose matches, but know that the players will need to be replaced at some point anyway.

It’s time for Ricky to be told to move on, as much as the English like having him around. I’m just not sure there’s anyone now that could take over from him?

And I’m not trying to be full of it, I do think tomorrow will be a big day for England and I look forward to what they can do, and hope they can fight it out for a good result.

PER in summer, not very likely!

The most depressing thing about the Oz side at the moment is the impotent bowling "attack". Often in the golden era the batsmen would make a mediocre score like this but then Pigeon, Warnie and co would have the opposition out for 100 odd. If England aren't 3 or 4 for 400+ this evening I will be pleasantly surprised.

Agree that the side needs to be purged (starting with Ponting) but the question is who will be brought in to replace them? I seriously hope I'm wrong, but can't see any budding Warnies or Gillys in the shield ranks right now:(

We were keeping track of this over lunch (there are three englishmen out of my team of five people) and were very pleased and almost shocked.

I think the aussies did well to to get to 268 in reality after their dreadful start. It will certainly be an interesting day today. I will be home in the afternoon and as mrssimongr is going to be out tonight I was planning to catch up on Assassin's Creed or Fable 3 - but I might be tied up with cricket...

I'm going to hark back to the Latham opinion piece I read last night. It seemed insightful given the comments here. He lamented for Aussie bowling when he saw Lee sharing a joke with the batsman. It lack the "hatred" of the batsmen that he reckon gave successful bowlers the edge.

Is Latham staking a claim for a selector spot? ;)

Dennis Lillee certainly regarded that as an attitude champion quicks couldn't do without.

Certainly share an ale with the Poms after stumps are pulled, but during the game it should be no prisoners taken:evil:

Here we go.

A Friday afternoon off from work, in front of the TV watching the cricket.
