This doesn't surprise me - Qantas kick off The Veronicas

Cabin crew are not supposed to lift luggage, for OHS reasons. They will have issues with coverage if they are injured doing so. So, yes some will help, but they are doing so at their own risk.
If they cannot, or will not assist, they're clearly in the wrong job.

And once again I get back to: if it's too heavy for you to lift, you should not pack it. If they were unable to lift their bags to the overhead, they should have checked them. I do not believe they are too short to lift their bags into the overhead, they did not want to do it. I have seen people step onto the aisle seat to do it, but it's still possible for all healthy adults. I bet their bags weighed a ton they'd struggled with that before and that's why they did not want to do it.

And no, the FA should not have had to touch the bag. As someone with back trouble, I'm on their side. And I'm surprised there's not other video, from other passengers which will clarify this whole incident.

I had thought that the Veronicas were an Afro-American group from the 1960's.
You'd be thinking of The Supremes, whom I remember well.
Or possibly The Exciters? Now they were seriously good.

Maybe the Von Trapps? Gretl was tiny

After reading all the comments, it would appear to be just a case of 2 nobodys wanting to assert themselves as somebodys.

DYKWIA attitude reported by one of the J class passengers who (allegedly) overheard and observed the episode. .

This raises a very important point. What was that business passenger doing looking back in the economy cabin. There are clear signs and instructions that Economy is economy only. I want to know why this business passenger wasn't ejected for failing to obey crew instructions when he moved his awareness into the economy cabin that is clearly not for him.

Also, ask the FA to show the "rule" that bags have to go in wheels first...? I can't find it on the QF website. Yes, sure, we know anecdotally that is the preference, and I've seen from time to time placards which show this is preferable (maybe on an airline in the USA...?) but if QF can't produce the written evidence in a publicly accessible location, how can they enforce such a "rule"? Again, sounds like over-zealous FA to me... and I've seen plenty of them on board. (In fairness, I've also experienced plenty of non over-zealous crew members... in my experience, these outweigh the cranky ones....).
I've seen the label in the bin, but a small person may not. Also depending on the aircraft, even some taller people can't see in, hence the mirror.

How did they get the bags into the lockers in the first place and how were they expecting to get them out? If you can't handle overhead lockers you should'nt use them. Don't take on hand luggage you can't put under the seat in front of you.

Why? They're not hired to lift heavy bags above their heads. As a tall bloke I am very careful about lifting my own bag into the overhead space.

If the situation arises where I consider lifting another person's bag (at their polite request) then I check the weight very carefully and, if too heavy will decline. I will also advise the FA that the bag is too heavy to lift safely. They appreciate the 'heads up' and will arrange for it to be gate checked.

Regardless of being covered for compensation, no one wants to be injured and a reasonable person will take all practicable steps to avoid injury. Especially where there is a safe alternative.

It may also assist passengers in learning to be responsible for their own luggage and not carrying too much stuff on-board.

Not sure of the source of that information. It may need a link.

Edit: Quite possible that the crew had been trying to assist in some way, but the "ladies" weren't having a bar of it. I'm still looking for their video evidence. :p

This takes the cake, although I may have missed it earlier.

This has happened in the lead-up to their new reality TV show -- 'Jess & Lisa: The Veronicas' -- which will premiere in November 2019. LOL.

Friend of mine was on that flight, just 3 rows behind (unlike the reported business class passenger that couldn't have heard a thing and just made an opinion about it)

The girls didn't raise their voice and weren't belligerent. when asked if they could move their luggage asked if I the FA could do it instead. Man helped them move their luggage.
Then the FA came back with another one, and asked one of the girl to stop filming, which she refused.

Then federal police got called. Plane got delayed 45 minutes. Of course other passengers got annoyed,

Total abuse of power by the FA who couldn't be bothered to help.

In almost all the flights I've taken, particularly on busy international flights; flight attendants reshuffle bags around and then close the overhead stowage.
It's part of their job. I had never seen a FA not willingly do so. But I haven't flown Qantas for years and won't do in the future unless there's absolutely no other alternatives.

Though, luckily for this forum, Qantas exists, otherwise it would be half empty as no one would have to report about being downgraded with no compensation, being refused entry to the lounge and the list goes on. Not surprisingly it only ever seem to occur with Qantas.

Why were they filming the staff? Sounds like they refused a legitimate instruction.

When you see two FA coming back to you, you can smell problem coming your way. Why wouldn't you film? Best way to get things sorted should things go awry.
