Titular Issues!

Re: QF "Seat Shifting"

Maybe but they are ones in control of the 'rules'.

Things are getting just a tad silly. Can we go back to the topic of seat switching?

So a thread about seat shifting changed into a thread about using the title of doctor and now you want to nurse it back to health?

My cat's vet and my dentist both call themselves doctors. Title inflation is rampant.

A bit like virtually every job title has the word 'officer' at the end of it. E.g. customer service officer.

Re: QF "Seat Shifting"

Doctor has become a very loose title that in my opinion should only be used by medical doctors. A PhD in Geology or Computer Science doesn't make you a doctor. Apologies Rooflyer if that is your title.
<snip>.

No worries :) but I'll get back to you once I've finished my one in History.

And what then if their surname is Doctor, and their given names are Doctor & Doctor?

Everyone knew that this was coming, right?

Re: QF "Seat Shifting"

And here was me thinking this was a new thread for women and we were talking about Bras !

You almost had me explaining what happened there!

But there's an extra I in the title. :D

Off topic on AFF is silly?

Not silly at all.

A person can choose what ever title they like. I don't have to use that title or recognise it. It really is that simple and nothing they can do about it.

So just because you feel comfortable using the title others don't.

You can of course disagree with my opinion but luckily I am not a servant and only use 'Dr' to refer to real doctors. If I was in customer service I may not have a choice.
You are of course entitled to your opinion but it would be an uninformed one. The use of doctor for those who hold the highest honours from a University considerably predates its use for people qualified in medicine, it derives from a word meaning teacher.

thought for sure this was a thread about the validity of the throne of King Richard Of Plantagenet. (super wine BTW, sorry, I digress)

But, I shall now be known as Esquire. (as in training for knighthood, not the magazine;)) Soon, you can call me Sir!

Re: QF "Seat Shifting"

I used to work for a company that employed quite a few vets. They all styled themselves 'doctor' but there was one of the vets who actually had a PhD as well so he was the only 'real' doctor there. Not that I'd want him operating on me. Or my dog for that matter... not that I've got a dog... now where was I?

To refuse to use someones title because you dont feel like it is incredibly rude. You don't recognise that I'm a doctor? The certificate on my wall says I am and there's "nothing you can do about it".

Vets have been entitled to use the courtesy title for over 50 years. It arose as a result of a vagary of degree nomenclature. In the vast majority of universities around the world, a veterinarian graduates with a degree of "Doctor of Veterinary Medicine" (DVM). The UK and therefore the colonies went with "Bachelor of Veterinary Science" (BVSc): the Uk then required membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and vets then had the letters MRCVS after their name as the degree identifier.

When I graduated in 1973, we were told that we would be one of the last years to have a degree of BVSc. It was only with the development of the University of Melbourne's "Melbourne model" in the late noughties that the postgraduate degree of DVM became standard.

I don't much care whether my clients call me Dr Mr or by my first name. The rare few who think they're a smart*ss by making a big deal of telling me they won't address me as Dr ("you're not a real doctor") come across as rude, petty and small-minded.

Apologies but there is something I can do about it. Whether you think I'm rude or not is irrelevant.

drron is a doctor even though he is Physician.
Princess Fiona is a doctor.
kpc is a doctor.
I think Quickstatus is a doctor .
If coriander is a vet they are also a doctor.
I also call my dentist a doctor.
As far as I'm concerned a surgeon is also a doctor.
I'm not sure a chiropractor is a doctor. Don't think so.

There are a few more doctors on AFF.

Dr Ralph is definitely not a doctor. You may have earned a doctorate but I won't refer to you as a doctor. Why is that difficult to understand? You'll note from my examples above on my meaning of doctor.

I also don't believe in abortion. Would you like to force me into that one as well?

Or euthanasia.

Just because society makes up some rules does not mean I have to follow or accept them. It really is that simple and I am not wrong in having that opinion and you and anyone else can't tell me otherwise.

Once again not only is your opinion flat out wrong, it's actually insulting to people who have done the work to earn those letters. You continuing to argue your opinion in this thread is for all intents and purposes trolling.

Your comment about society making rules and you not having to follow them is incredibly rich coming from someone who is constantly whinging about manners and how people behave in public.

You dont get to "believe" that someone is a doctor. They are or they arent. Those with a PhD are. Its just the way it is.
