I only recognise one Doctor:
It is also rude when a PHD sees you as a patient and says I am not going to call you a doctor because you aren't a real one.As pointed out up thread Physicians were called doctor for centuries before research PHDs came along.
But I agree the other way is also rude.
A little aside-on a QF flight an FA approached me and asked "are you a real doctor drron?"
"Do you mean a medical doctor?" says I.
"Yes."
So there you have it.On a frequent flyer site the word of an FA should be final!

Dr who?......
This has surely gone off the rails for good. I'm sorry I brought up the "real Doctor" comment in response to the Mrs/Miss/Ms debate - particularly as blackcat20 really meant to infer rejection of the sexist terminology ... but initially failed to get that across.
In my opinion if you have a Doctorate then you are a Doctor, and if you have graduated with a medical degree then by convention you are a Doctor too.

The number of people who try to ask me about some genetic quirk they have..I have to remind them that I worked on bats, barnacles and alpacas....
Apologies but there is something I can do about it. Whether you think I'm rude or not is irrelevant.
drron is a doctor even though he is Physician.
Princess Fiona is a doctor.
kpc is a doctor.
I think Quickstatus is a doctor .
If coriander is a vet they are also a doctor.
I also call my dentist a doctor.
As far as I'm concerned a surgeon is also a doctor.
I'm not sure a chiropractor is a doctor. Don't think so.
There are a few more doctors on AFF.
Dr Ralph is definitely not a doctor. You may have earned a doctorate but I won't refer to you as a doctor. Why is that difficult to understand? You'll note from my examples above on my meaning of doctor.
I also don't believe in abortion. Would you like to force me into that one as well?
Or euthanasia.
Just because society makes up some rules does not mean I have to follow or accept them. It really is that simple and I am not wrong in having that opinion and you and anyone else can't tell me otherwise.
Nice post. You are right. Their title has no impact on my life either but I will fight for my right to have an opinion and air that opinion.I don't give a rats a^*% what title people give themselves - either by choice or because it's been earned/ bestowed on them. This is because their title has no impact or effect on my life so there is no point devoting energy to worrying about it.
However I do think your post is disrespectful to those people that have put in the work to obtain their PhD.
Your comment about society making rules and you not having to follow them is incredibly rich coming from someone who is constantly whinging about manners and how people behave in public.

The PhD would do well to remember what medical doctors do with their mistakes. Bury them!
