And your turn back made the paper:

[h=1]Fuel pump fault causes Qantas A380 to turn back mid-flight[/h]
A Qantas flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne was forced to turn back mid-air because of a fuel pump fault.
A Qantas spokeswoman said the A380 Airbus, which departed LAX at 12.52am (local time) on April 17, had already passed Hawaii when the captain was alerted to a system failure.

I have really enjoyed your TR and have seen places I've been to and others I want to.

Thank you for a great report especially the photos.

Thanks, glad you've enjoyed it, wasn't too sure if people were enjoying it as all the posts have been from me! It's certainly harder work than I anticipated.

The Qantas saga continues, I walked down to the gate to find a screen advising of a delay - our flight tonight has been delayed because QF12 was having engine troubles and wasn't able to get out of our gate, so whilst our aircraft is ready to go, it's got no where to park. Why they can't just use any of the other 30 empty gates is above my pay grade.

Pretty frustrating after our initial day.

Credit where credit is due though, the Captain made an announcement to the lounge, about who what why and when, and then did a walk through offering to answer any questions. I thought that was very good.

Well JMFK you were really close to where we live when we are in Los Angeles. The burger place is one set of traffic lights north and I am glad you enjoyed In N Out. It is hard to spend more than 5 dollars on a meal there and it is so fresh.
Thanks for the photos in your TR which I really appreciated.

Cove, if you don't mind me asking - where do you stay when you live in LA?

I'm looking for something around Venice Beach/Santa Monica in nov this year. Can't seem to decide on anything at the moment.

After my slip down some stairs in Margaret river 2 weeks ago, I'm included to stay away from apartments with stairs (broken ankle in 3 places with pins/plates/screws/ligament snapped/joint smashed)

Any recommendations would be great.

JMFK thanks for your trip report. We are off for a conference in Vegas in November again so I'm going to check out a few places you suggested :)

Enjoyed the TR. Thanks for taking the time to post...

Very much enjoyed the TR (your level of info vs commentary/opinion is good for me) but your attraction to burgers makes me wince a bit :)

Fantastic TR... Maybe the 24 hour delay allows you to join the QF service once again ;-)

We stay in Marina del Rey. In Santa Monica we have stayed at Loews and it was lovely. In Marina del Rey there is the Ritz Carlton that our neighbours like in Admiralty Way.
The renamed hotel in Maxella is MDR which used to be a Courtyard if you have a shoe fetish seeing Designer Shoe Warehouse is next door (DSW). Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, the Yard House and the dine in movie theatre are all just across the road so you might like that one.
My sons always loved Embassy Suites North at LAX as it offers what they liked when they travelled with us. It is just off West Century and you might get it for a very reasonable price for a suite.

JMFK, have really enjoyed the TR, especially all the photos - the bit at the end must have been the icing on the cake!

Finally got around to reading is, it's great! You're reminding me of all the things I want to do in NYC next month :D

Again a quote from PPrune

We diverted back to KLAX about 4 1/2 hours into the flight when a normal main tank fuel transfer resulted in both the main and standby fuel pumps in the right mid tank failing which trapped 26,800kg fuel. Overweight landing at approx 433,000kg requiring a stabilised approach at 148kt, instead of the normal decelerating approach, hence the heads up to ATC. Fire trucks requested in case of hot brakes.

I have only read the LAX delays and hamburger place visit section, but this is an outstanding trip report. The Sheraton looks pretty average but it supposedly has normal rooms for US$180 or so, so one assume that QF might obtain a room for perhaps US$90 - US$120. With meal vouchers, bus hire and so on, that's a cool US$35,000 at least to accommodate the 464 passengers (meaning at a guess up to 300 rooms required).

For the accessible fuel (as opposed to the 26800 kilograms of it that was 'trapped'), is the reason that none was dumped prior to landing because to do so would mean the plane had less than a comfortable safety margin of fuel, or is it for environmental reasons, or simply because the flight crew and Qantas' operations' centre in Sydney know that an overweight landing (while not without challenges) is eminently achievable so to discard fuel into the atmosphere is wasteful?

Great TR and I thought the photos were very good. Thanks for your hard work

I just got to read this thread from the beginning and enjoyed it very much! Very detailed and many photos, no one could have done it any better JMFK, and it's only your first TR :)
I was very underwhelmed with the Hiltons in the US. I guess I got used to the much better properties in AsiaPac. Same goes for the airline lounges. I guess the US is all about the sightseeing, and there is plenty to see ;)

Really have enjoyed this TR, especially as I'm heading to Vegas and NY for the first time in June.

Couple of questions, you mention Uber a bit. Is it worth going down the track over a normal taxi when I'm over there?
Also in regards to coffee, I heard its a bit of a night mare to get a latte and saw that you mentioned a double shot at one point... What should I be asking for while I'm over there?

Once again, thoroughly enjoyed this TR.

Dinner at the Paparazzi restaurant in the Sheraton.

Just had to ‘Antipasti’ selections, thinking they’d be smaller options. They weren’t! Calamari and the chef’s recommendation, Pizza. Both very average. Washed it down with a glass of Pinot Grigio. Also average. Total cost – my breakfast and dinner meal voucher, combined. Or $41.

Jumped onto the shuttle to TBIT and headed for Check-in. As a freshly minted plat it was straight to the front of the queue in the First check-in line. This saved me a total of zero minutes, as the business line was empty too, and there were only about 5 people in the economy line. The agent advised that she could see my booking, but couldn’t get it ticketed. It was at this point I gulped. She disappeared for about 10 minutes, but came back with it sorted. Crisis over.

Through security again and up to Level 5. I wish I had been given the option of using the first class security lane which was empty. Instead I had to join business and economy. Not too bad I guess, about 15 minutes to get through security.

Into the F lounge, which is almost identical to the Business lounge on the other side. Indeed, the same food offerings. It was slightly less busy than the business lounge the day before, but still full.

This pic was taken after QF108 and QF12 had left the lounge.

Our flight was scheduled for 1045 boarding, so I headed down to the gate at 10:44pm, eager to get on board and into my PJ’s!

QF12 was still at our gate, and signs advised a delayed boarding of 1115pm. So I went for a little walk and returned to the gate. At this point, the Captain of our flight advised that QF12 were having trouble getting their engines started, and because they couldn’t push back, we couldn’t get our aircraft, which was cleaned and ready to go, into the gate for boarding. He advised he thought we would be boarding at 1145pm.

Disgruntled after the comedy of errors this morning, I went back to the lounge.

Shortly after, the Captain made a lounge announcement, similar to the one he made at the gate, advising passengers of the situation, and the new boarding time. He then walked through the lounge and offered to answer any questions.

Whilst this delay was annoying, I thought it was excellent that the Captain made these announcements and kept people in the loop. Certainly went above and beyond I think. He did mention it that he thought it was best for people to hear it “from the horses mouth”. But I did admire that he went to that effort, especially as it was out of his control.

We were eventually called for boarding and were probably taxing for take off around 1am.

I took my seat in 13E and settled in. I opted for the Sea Bass which was a little chewy, but fairly tasty.

It was the same menu as yesterdays flight.

Settled in for a movie, took a couple of Melatonin pills, and went to sleep.

Breakfast was good, but again cold, which was disappointing.

I’d called before leaving the airport to confirm that my transfer for my original flight had carried over to the new booking. It hadn’t but the agent on the phone arranged it for me. Lucky I’d checked!

My driver was waiting and it was straight home! A silver Caprice with what must of been the most professional driver I've ever encountered. He even asked if it was OK for him to have a drink of water from his water bottle! I was shocked, and said Of course, don't be silly!

IMG_4339.jpg

That’s it folks! Hope it was enjoyed, it was certainly more work than I’d anticipated, and apologies that it got a little sloppy towards the end!

I assumed it was due to the cost of dumping 26 tonnes of fuel!

I did read in the Herald Sun today that 'Passengers feared for their lives" along with a quote from a passenger who said that the captain made a strange announcement saying they 'had a serious fuel issue' and didn't have enough fuel to make it to Australia or Hawaii.

This was total cough and just goes to show you can't trust the papers. Though this is typical sensationalist cough from the Herald Sun.

No one feared for their lives, and the captain made the situation very clear. I never felt unsafe, in fact, the captain even mentioned that the aircraft was perfectly fine. He advised the reason we couldn't land at HNL (which we were flying over at the time of the issue) was because QF had an engineering base at LAX and not at HNL.
