TV series discussion {'ware Spoiler Alert}

Watched the first two episodes of The Crown and thoroughly enjoyed it - a bit of royals never hurt anyone though a bit worried to read that it should run for 60 episodes over 6 series, not sure I can last the distance.

Second last episode of Season 4 of "A Place to call Home" tonight.

The show has been renewed for Season 5 which will be set in 1958. My guess is that most of the main story lines will tie up in the next 2 episodes and they won't have a cliff hanger. I'm hoping it ends the way Bevan Lee wanted it to end.

Me too. My mum would have loved it. Believe it or not it was my 26 year old son who has watched the series and said I must watch it. He was the one who put me on to GoT so I trust his judgement.

I love this too.

Have just about finished Luke Cage, a netflix series based upon a Marvel comic. Very good if you are into superheroes, and even if you are not (it is not necessarily my thing but happy to try different genres). It was a bit slow for some of the earlier episodes but is worth sticking with.

Watching the depressing current season of The Walking Dead has led us to watch "Fear the Walking Dead" on Presto. Have seen the first five out of six of the first series. Does it get better? Currently not that excited by it but it's a lot less depressing than TWD currently.

I don't mind it. I also like watching the 'Talking Dead' talk show after both shows.

Their is a fan theory that the main actress is the sister of Rick Grimes.

After loving Richard II on SBS last week (The Hollow Crown), I was really disappointed in Henry IV part 1. Sooooo many liberties taken with the original, even having scenes changed in order. I can tolerate some abbreviation for TV, but I loath it when some young producer thinks they know better than Bill as to how the story is told.

Mum always told me that Princess Margaret was never allowed to marry Townsend but according to The Crown, she could have married him when she turned 25. Liberties or not?

I haven't watched that episode yet. Just up to it next I think.

Coronation was good. I would like to see one but not if it's Chazza. The first time anything was shown on TV and it was Prince Phillips idea and he had to push it. Apparently.

Yes, watched that episode last night - one almost feels sorry for old Edward. They certainly did not forgive his abdication. The characterisations are very good. Mr L_t_L said that the news of King George's death came just as they were leaving England to move to Australia. He was only 18 months old so didn't really remember but his parents talked about it at different times.

I think Edward came across as a bit of a tosser. Abdicated the throne but still wanted to be thought of as King. There is a funny line in one of the interviews in the US 'oh, so you were never actually crowned King then'. Except he was. More license.

Yes he does, but I suppose it's a bit hard to get over being shunned by the family and government. He was the king by right and I think I read there was a secular ceremony but there was no coronation as that was planned for 1937 and he had gone in December, so I suppose the comment that he never was actually crowned (in terms of coronation) could be seen as OK.
Queen Mary looked exactly like her portraits/photos that I have seen.

Agree - they really have cast people well.

It's interesting to observe the morals of the time: Sir Anthony Eden and at least three cabinet members were divorced, yet the refusal of the Church to countenance her marriage and the venom of the Government of the day was directed more at her because she was a woman (even to the point that she would essentially be exiled). I find it "interesting" that three of her sister's (ie Elizabeth) children are divorced. The hypocrisy was understated in the series, but so obviously there. All in all, a great watch. Roll on season 2.

The issue with divorce is not important as long as the 'ex' is dead. So Charlie and Camille could do their thing. And neither Andrew nor Anne have remarried. Peter Townsend's wife was still alive. Gender wasn't the issue.
