Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Very interesting to note that many Labour heartlands such as North East England voted leave comprehensively.
Both the conservative and Labour parties in the UK have large voting blocks against their parties wishes.

True!

But, I find the most interesting part is Scotland and Northern Ireland. Very interested to see what develops over the next year or so. I believe the exit plan calls for a 2 year withdrawal schedule?

SNP and Sinn Fein are already making rumblings, although I'm sure they have at least started to prepare for this eventuality.

The SNP started making rumblings about another referendum about 10 minutes after the result of the last one was know. As for Sinn Fein (BTW this means 'we ourselves', so quite ironic in this circumstance) calling for a referendum on independence for the 6 counties is a mantra of theirs. I'm pretty sure that it's at the bottom of every press release they put out. All in all, I wouldn't put too much weight on those voices.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Good to see the UK following that great Australian tradition of changing PM's without involving the electorate. (Yes I know the UK probably did it first but Australia does it regularly.) :p

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Cameron has resigned.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

And Dave has gone, is Corbyn next? probably

Corbyn might be safe because he's only been leader of the opposition for a short time.

Commendable post result speech from David Cameron too, I thought, which is a bit unusual for leaders who have just suffered a loss.

Maybe he just wants to get out now because of the impact of brexit rather than the vote 'against' his choice.

I think he was correct in saying that, given the position he took, it would be inappropriate for him to oversee the transition.

This is a comment by some Italian politician which sums up the situation succinctly:

The mere fact that a country like Great Britain is holding a referendum on whether to leave the EU signals the failure of the European Union.

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Yep, Boris is VERY likely the next PM - and it could be soon.

Labour still exists, but was seriously wounded in the last election. They will fight back next time!

British PM David Cameron has just said he will resign in the wake of the Brexit vote. He didn't announce a specific timetable for his departure but said he expected to hand over to 'new leadership' by October.

However notice no timeline

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

Not nearly as much as the German & French ones which lent those vanished billions to Greece, Spain etc.

That's why Brussels thought it and decided to charge countries that did take on or want to take immigrants.( no turning boats back) Australia is next BTW there has been talk of testing the waters again after elections. Just imagine the same being done in Australia !

No wonder EU was unpopular deciding about such decisions on behalf of countries in the EU without their involvement .

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

The London stock exchange (FTSE) is down over 4% but the German (DAX) is down 6% and the French (CAC) over 7%. So who is more worried?

Re: UK - in or out of the EU?

CBA has suspended all AUD-GBP trading until Monday morning, effectively stranding any of their Aussie customers in the UK at the moment.
