Upright vs Spinner luggage

Good thread, I'm looking to replace my carry on and tossing up between 2 or 4 wheel. I currently have 2 wheel Samsonite soft shell which I like but it has seen better days. I'm also a bit worried how a 4 wheel spinner will handle rough surfaces and I can see there are mixed reviews about it.
I like the idea of hard shell that also has a pocket for laptop. At first I considered the Rimowa Salsa Deluxe Hybrid which has excellent reviews but it's expensive. A cheaper option is the Victorinox Spectra 2.0 55cm Dual Access which has caster wheels that suppose to make it easier to move on carpets.
It seems like most luggage shops in Australia offer the same selection of Samsonite, Antler and American Tourister. Not easy to find hard shell hybrids.

I hate four wheel spinners with a passion. They roll around on public transport for one. You see them rolling around all over the place on buses, trains etc, but this is more the fault of the owner than the luggage itself. They also struggle with kerbs and other obstructions more than decent two wheeled luggage. Well designed two wheeled luggage also hides the wheels from transportation damage as well.

I cannot actually see any useful advantages of spinners if you are not old and/or have any physical strength.

I moved from 2 wheel luggage because I found that when I had a very heavy load in my suitcase, the middle of it would sag and cause it to drag on the ground when pulling it along. Maybe the more expensive 2 wheelers don't do it, but I'll never know because I'm happy with the spinner now.

Strand bags is always having a sale ;) . I saw some in Djs too recently in their sale.
Strandbags are having a sale at the moment. Picked up 2 x 82cm Samsonite Brightlite spinners for $299 each & a 55cm for $199.

I tend to agree and my old Samsonite is just fine, lightish, strong, good wheels, no sag - but I don't tend to go over 23kgs often.

Mayer and DJ usually offer the second bag for 50% (from the full price). It's ok if you need to buy two pieces of luggage but if only one then better buy outside at 40% off.

Totally agree. I also know the pain of trying to buy a 2 wheeler recently - had to trawl through many shops, and couldn't find one to my exact specifications which used to be easy (2 wheel, good handle on top and side, inside and outside pockets, sturdy extendable handle). Had to get one without external pocket, so no cramming in a last minute newspaper for me.

I don't 'hate' spinners but otherwise agree.
I use to be a two wheel convert, but got sick of having to hold the weight while in ques while being envious of others with 4 wheel spinners. ...
I used one once and could not wait to get rid of it on my return - it kept wandering off on it's own accord and I ended having to lay it on it's side when resting. These days I look at those sporting 4 wheels and feel a sense of pity for the users.

I proceed warily when near them given their propensity to go walkabout. I once saw one roll out onto the road at MEL departures level to be solidly bumped by a moving cab as it hit the passenger door - a second earlier and the bag would likely have been crushed.

Perhaps automatic park brakes are the answer?

Lol! True. Though 50% of the ticketed price is pretty decent I thought. Only the graphite colour was on sale, the blue colour was still full price, $599 for the 82cm & $399 for the 55cm.

I choose the spinner, yes, it is easy to wander, yes it doesn't travel so well on certain surfaces, inside space may be smaller than 2 wheel case but I've learned to manage the above and find the ease of it travelling with me by my side overcomes any above issues. I found the London taxi driver is aware of it's wandering and automatically puts case on side, not standing up. :)

I wonder if there are any baggage handlers here on AFF. I have been told that they preferred spinners because they can roll the bag on its wheels to the back of the hold rather than walk it down.

Ill put the question in "ask the pilot" about juggage in the aircraft hold

Another pet hate of mine is the handle design on many cases. The handle is simply a strap which lies flat against the case. Try picking this up as the carrousel goes speeding by.

The 2 wheelers are still around

2 Wheel Luggage

yes but I'm in the USA not Australia. My need was also pretty immediate so it was either a two wheeler that looked like it wouldn't make it on a single flight or a four wheeler.

I I will be searching soon for another 2 wheeler though.

This thread inspired me to go looking for a new cabin bag yesterday.
I had a 2 wheeler tosca, which I've had for some time, and although it is still in perfect working order, I wondered if it was contributing to my sore shoulder, with many trecks pulling it behind me.
I left the store with a 4 wheel antler which weights 2kgs.
I hope I've made a good choice....I'm giving it a test run domestically today.
Fingers crossed

TQ

We are 'spinners' all the way. On smooth surfaces its great, and on no-so-good surfaces we can still grab the handles and use it like its on two wheels. We've taken it over 100 sectors and bags operate still like new :)

One disadvantage of spinners that I failed to mention in my earlier post is that they can prevent the case fitting into tight hotel room luggage spaces, where a two wheeler, with partially recessed wheels, would fit.

Depending on how often you travel, consider the Kogan sets of spinner luggage

I bought the ultra tough charcoal spinners for $150, comes as a set of 3 and have TSA locks incorporated.

They did 53 days and 12 sectors in the USA and have done a few more since returning and have been great, no problems at all.

Cant say i would have been any more impressed buying some of the bigger names out there.

Have been using $25 fake Tumi 2 wheel rollers from Beijing market for 6 or 7 years - PERFECT. Lashed out and bought $30 fake 4 wheel Tumi spinner at Beijing market last month - WORST DECISION I EVER MADE.

Can't wait to get back there next week to secure another 2 wheel 25 bucker - NEVER AGAIN 4 WHEEL CARRY ON.

Since this thread started I have become aware of how 2 wheelers are like hens teeth. Suggest you import fake Tumi 2WD in a container and corner the market.

Hmmm - food for thought? Are they really scarce here? Admin how do I get a Guernsey in your travel gear section?
