US Dividend Miles - Award Booking Questions and General Discussion

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

I was so close. The agent even said to me, that should be 30,000 miles but I will just get it checked out. The reason the rates desk provided was that Tokyo is not a hub for Thai (arriving on TG) so routing is not valid, let alone the rest of it!

I just rang back to see if i could get it re-checked, explained that it's the only way to get to GUM etc no dice. Cancelled the booking.

Will try again!

as you have found out there are half a dozen reasons why they can deny this itinerary... stopover not on most direct route, exceeding MPM, stopover not in star hub, invalid routing not displayed by star alliance.

it has been done before, so keep trying! :)

NRT is too far east - try KIX or NGO ;)

It took me 5 calls.....

This - it comes down to pure luck. Stay calm, and keep trying. I did it after much frustration.

Maybe 'USDM to GUM' needs a thread of its own?

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

My take on the intra zone award rule is that you are not allowed a stopover only if the travel is solely (e.g MEL to AKL) within one zone, since there is no way getting to GUM without going through Asia from MEL, this rule does not apply. Either way, it works every time.....

Sorry, but I don't think is correct at all. The rule is in place because you are using such few miles for what is generally either a domestic, or short-haul intl flight(s) and therefore shouldnt be entitled to the bonus of a stopover.

GUM is very unique for Australians because it is classed in our zone yet not close to Australia. Yes there is a direct CNS-GUM flight which fits the 'domestic, short-haul intl' concept but from all other cities it requires much more travelling via Asia.

The only way to get a free stopover on an intrazone award is to be lucky enough to speak to an operator who doesn't know or forgets the rule that you cant have a stopover on an intrazone award. There are many ways of getting there from MEL without going through Japan, its just that that country is the most exotic and attractive option for most of us here. If you rang up and said 'its the only way to get there from MEL therefore I should be allowed a stopover in Japan - check with your supervisor' I suspect you would not get the answer you are looking for!

Isn't it a hub for ANA?

Sometimes the operators enforce the rule that arrival at a stopover must be on an airline hubbed at that port.

Yep correct. It is written in the guide but it is one of the most ignored rules out there. Just thought it was funny try quoted that one when there are so many other things wrong with the itinerary!

I agree with you. Like I said, it is my take on the rule. There is plenty of blog/threads on 'hanging up and call again' when booking with USDM if it is not going your way. Sometimes it can be a breeze and if you lucky enough, you can even get something like BRU-VIE via NRT as one zone award! Luck and making their job easier by getting all the segments ready for them play a big factor. It's all part of the game and USDM will be missed for that after November....

Is November the confirmed date for when USDM miles will transfer to AA ?

5th call. Tried KIX this time as per suggested... there is one Y flight (KIX-SIN) due to availability going this afternoon since I last checked but I think we can stomach that.

Booking is on hold at 30,000/$194 PP. Will sleep on it tonight, apply for leave tommorow!

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

If I get it to price out I am paying then and there, no holding! Good luck!

I have seen speculation that Nov 1 will be the end of *A for US and the start of *O for the interim, prior to the full merger next year.

All booked for easter next year.

MEL-SIN SQ J
SIN-KIX SQ J
KIX-GUM UA J

GUM-KIX UA J
30 Hour stop over
KIX-SIN SQ Y
SIN-MEL SQ J

60,000 miles + $396 in taxes/fees.

Thanks for everyone's help, pretty happy with that.. even with a Y flight! :D

Is that for 2 people?

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

Knew I forgot something.. sure is.

Confirmation codes check out on SQ/UA as well so all good.

Well done, I am still struggling away but determined to get it! I reckon having the Japan stopover on the way back may make it a little easier as the itinerary actually looks like it is MEL-GUM, where I am trying to get the stopover on the way there which breaks the itinerary up so I think they first look at the region Japan is in when pricing it. Unfortunately I can't change that up.

Yes I think that could be the problem but just being polite and persistent is the key.

Mine took 6 calls in the end, first two priced at 90,000 points due to going via NRT, 3rd call I cancelled the booking, 4th call the agent told me there is no way to do it as Us Airways doesn't service that route. 5th call priced it at what I wanted and 6th call confirmed this morning.

The amazing thing is..I actually got the USDM confirmation email for the first time!

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

Good work. I have tried twice now, with a couple of call backs to try and get it repriced but I think once they have put a note in at 90,000 on the booking they aren't going to all of a sudden go back on it. Will call again tonight and if not cancel and hope the inventory comes back. The annoying thing is it takes about half an hour to get all the flights put in first! As they say, 'no pain, no gain'.

I do apologise for taking this thread a bit OT.

Re: US Dividend Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here.

After several calls on Sat night managed to change it to the following:

SYD-BKK (TG)
BKK-IST (TK)
IST-OSL (TK)
OSL-KEF (SK)

then back

ZAG-CDG (OU)
CDG-BKK (TG A380)
BKK-MEL (TG)

all J. Flying out of SYD because there was no MEL-BKK availability. I was very happy that we were allowed to fly back into MEL rather than having to fly back to our point of origin (SYD). Agent said in 8 years of booking redemptions she had never done one to Iceland. (she didnt know what it was).

Just returned from this - my first USDM trip. Apart from TK misplacing our luggage in IST everything went great. Some general thoughts:

- First time in intl J. It is a big, BIG step up from Y in every sense of the world. A much more comfortable way to travel and I cannot imagine going back to long-haul Y!
- TG was as everyone says it is - solid but not spectacular. Loved the 2-2 upstairs in the 747 (very exclusive) but also enjoyed how spacious the 777-200 J cabin is. A380 is great - the fully flat seats are much more comfortable than the TG sloping seats on the 747 and 777 and the 'couple' seats in E&F are very nice when travelling with someone else. Food got a little repetitive after 3 flights with them. I would actively avoid 11 D&G and 25 D&G as they stick out into the galley and are a really poor design. So. much. food.
- TK was good for something different. Food is really excellent and the IST Lounge is as outstanding as everyone says it is - by far the best lounge I have ever been in. The staff on TK were very indifferent though - the customers seemed like quite an inconvenience to them.
- SK have removed J product on short-haul routes but now have a Y+ type offering that replaces it which is basically the same as J except that the meal is more basic. I wasn't too concerned having eaten so much on the TG and TK flights.
- OU was dire and I cannot understand how they are a *A member. No domestic lounge, priority screening or boarding at their hub and their intl lounge is without question the worst lounge I have ever been in - the entire options for breakfast were one type of cake. Food was quite good onboard I will say.
- transfer at CDG was a nightmare and I will actively avoid transferring there as I do with LHR. OU couldnt (or wouldnt) give us our TG boarding pass, told us to collect at CDG, there was no *A transfer desk at CDG. *A CDG lounge told us to get it at the gate (and wouldnt let us into the lounge without it), v difficult and time consuming to get through security without a boarding pass to get to the gate, of course no staff at the gate until boarding time, other *A service desk staff told us they wouldnt do it. Ended up having to go through immigration and to check-in, and then straight back through security to get to the lounge just to get this bloody boarding pass. Naturally TG had given away our pre-assigned seats to someone else in the meantime. Wasted well over an hour trying to get a boarding pass.
- *A lounge in CDG is not as bad as everyone says it is. Yes its not brilliant but I've certainly seen worse.
- we had a separate TK segment out of BEG and advised we could use the 1 lounge all airlines there use and it was actually brilliant. Very quiet, peaceful and almost deserted, spotless and new, limited but good food options, free pour spirits and very enthusiastic staff who seemed generally excited that we were there. I am very surprised and very impressed at finding such a good lounge at such a bad airport.

It's not that SK have removed it, but more so ... welcome to "business class" intra-EU ;)

Also... re: OU ... welcome to intra-EU "lounges" :D
