Can someone explain to me how the bonus with sharing miles works? Is there a cost?

there is no current share miles promo. but when it is on it offers you bonus miles - often 100%. So if you have 10K miles in your account and you share it to someone else, they will get 20K miles. Of course you lose the miles from your account. the cost to transfer is 1c per mile plus taxes.

the current promo is valid for buy or gift miles. You can buy for yourself, buy 10K get 20K. Or you can buy them for someone else as a gift. Buy the, 10K they would get 20K. The normal price for purchase applies, 3.5c per mile.

Thanks for explaining that. I got confused with sharing and gifting. I had 120k worth of miles I wanted to share as I don't really need them and I thought if there was a bonus for sharing then I would transfer them to a family member.

you can always hang on to them until they have a share promo - or you or one of your family can use them. You can extend their life beyond 18 months for a total payment of USD9 to US airways. Validates them for another 18 months.

Haha I think I'll swap them with a friend for some QF points. Need to build up for a couple of J one world award fare's in case I ever get married :)

be careful if you swap them. A different surname to the account holder has led to some people having their accounts suspended (and the audit department won't speak to you if you try to call).

Sale or barter of points is against the rules. And the presumption is that no one just 'gives' miles away for free to a friend... you usually get something in return.

You may have to give USDM some good reason why you just gave away points. (A wedding gift might be a good example.)

Damn you got me scared for a minute. I had to double check when I originally purchased them. I've got another 6 months before hte 18 months comes around.

If there's a share promo during that time I'll send them to a family member otherwise i'll just pay the USD9 to extend their life.

But can you just give away points with USDM - by what mechanism...points.com? Isn't that what the share function is for...at a cost? Still revenue for USDM.

The issue might be more with trying to transfer QF points...don't think transferring to a friend is allowed?

Or you mean a more informal swap...booking for each other?

yes you can gift points without any problems. So i guess that would be a solution - but you would have to pay the 1c per mile plus tax.

There hasn't been a good share promo for a while, last was 50% which is not worthwhile, I'm hanging out for a 100% one because as you say that equates to 1c a point, considerably better than current (though I will buy 10+10 to top up).

There are lots of ways to keep your account ticking over with a few points here and there. PM me if you want ideas.

less than 1c per point received by the sharee - in fact only .5c per point. But you had to buy the points in the first place. Assuming they were bought at 1.75c each, plus the .5c = 2.25c per mile to the sharee. Less favourable than outright buying or gifting.

Yep, I got the 100% bonus offer also ..... sad that I cannot find any valid reason to travel overseas right now! Locked down with upcoming little Edison!

Ok... So I just got off the phone with the call center and have the following on hold. SYD - BKK - JNB (J), JNB - CAI - LHR - LAX (J), LAX - SYD (J). Quoted 110,000 miles per person, $465~tax and $50pp booking fee. Seems a bit low, but no questions asked about the round the world booking, but I thought the miles would be 120,000 for J. Should I endeavour to correct this prior to booking? Has anyone had trips cancelled on here that were priced incorrectly?

We paid 110.000 PER->BKK->ICN->JFK->FRA-BKK-PER in May and all was sweet

Looks to me like these promo offers are 'almost' on offer every other month. I think that this is my 3rd or 4th promo from US Airways this year, and some have been open for more than 1 month.

However, I'm in the same shoes as Anat0l at the moment....*sigh*....lol
