Some even suggested they would like a card that would allow their points earnt to offset UTILITY BILLS :shock:

Well call me a nut...but somehow doing a Points Run just for a bit more gas, or water, does not have quite the same allure as earning a trip to Paris, Thailand etc...:shock:

Still if it was not for the masses....;)

Hey Alan,
You can have an open jaw OR a stopover.

Under USAirways you need to have a stopover at the hub of the inbound carrier.
TG = BKK
LX = GVA, ZRH
LH = MUC, FRA
TK = IST
CO = EWR, HOU
etc.......

So, you could fly into LHR and out of CDG but not have a stopover.

your comments helps alot, thanks sr81

just to clarify, under the rules that a stopover must be made at the incoming carriers hub eg. LH at FRA .... then if I wanted to just visit only FRA, I would have to fly LH into FRA ... and thus cannot fly TG into FRA

This is strictly correct but get an agent that isn't 100% on hubs and you can easily say that you are flying to a Lufthansa hub, therefore use it as a stopover. This works pretty well 90% of the time.

You can also look to fly into a city then connect up to FRA. You may also have issues with having a stopover in the same region though I am not 100% on this. Some people have been able to and some haven't.

What specific itin are you considering?

my understanding of the rules is that stopovers need to be made at a parner hub city, but there is no restriction that the flight must be inbound or outbound on the partner carrier's flight. One or the other (inbound or outbound) will do. For example inbound to BKK on SQ and departing on TG is fine.

While itineraries Australia-USA have been booked with travel via Europe, technically speaking rules only permit stopovers on the most direct routing.

Be very careful on this, there are examples on Flyertalk where US Revenue Protection has frozen accounts and cancelled tickets where the 'creative' routing means they will lose out when the partner carrier bills them.

Not sure I agree with this one. The accounts that were audited had purchased a large number of miles (500,000+) then bought tickets for people with different names. The accounts were suspected to be suspended because USAir thought that people were selling mileage tickets for profit. Directly against the T&C's.

Going to the US via EU from the South Pacific is not a creative routing. USAirways allows this routing. I know this is OK as many, many people on FT plus my own family have done it in the premium cabins. The one big rule seems to be that the miles come from the account of the traveler.

Agree with MEL_traveler re stopovers. I had forgot that it could be in or out bound with the home hub carrier.

I wasn't referring to bulk buying with phoney accounts and reselling award tickets.

I was referring to routings booked that result in US losing out when they are billed by the partner airline:

Cancelled booking and locked account by us airways (Now updated with result) - Page 7 - FlyerTalk Forums

By stopping over in a partner airline's non-hub city it is quite possible that this would cause the total cost of the fare to substantially increase and put you square in the sights of US revenue management.

Whilst many have gotten away with this, I think a lot of people would think twice about taking the same kind of risk only to have their dream holiday in F shot to hell and a nightmare in trying to get their money back.

Agree it is not creative (in the sense of backtraking etc) but it is certainly not the most direct routing. I would not be surprised if an agent disallowed it, or wanted to charge the higher zone for a stopover outside the zone miles are taken from (for example, wanting to charge 120,000 as the stop is outside the USA-Oz zone of 110,000).

If there are any problems it would be a case of call back with a different agent.

But seriously though, regardless of most direct route or not, it is still a huge bargain and sometimes it is just not worth the risk of over-maximising it.

I just finished booking 2 separate tix for me & SWMBO from Aus - Europe with stopover in India which should cost 150k miles each in F.

When ticketing SWMBO's itinerary the USAgent interpreted it as Aus - Europe <stop> - India <dest> = 120k miles. :shock:

I paid for my booking this morning for a similar itinerary and was charged the expected 150k miles.

So with USAgents you never know what you get, some may allow somethings that others wouldn't... of course YMMV.

SWMBO's routing SYD-BKK-IST-ZRH-FRA-BLR-BKK-SYD all segments except intra - europe & BLR - BKK in F.

My routing

SYD-BKK-IST-ZRH-DLA-JNB-FRA-ZRH-DEL-BKK-SYD

This includes
* LX new F ZRH-DLA & ZRH-DEL
* LH A388 J JNB-FRA

Nice routing. What did you pay in miles and did you book your African trip separatly?

Also, did you have any troubles booking the stopover in DEL with out it being a hub?

How was it booking LX F? Any issues?

Sorry for the questions. Am chasing a wedding in India with a trip to Europe next year.

150k miles (Aus - Europe F award)

The SA trip is a separate BMI redemption.

No troubles getting a stopover in DEL or with LX/LH F.

Just got word of this great deal!:lol:

I've just signed up for a Dividend Miles account. The T&C's state accounts less than 12 days old are not able to buy miles. I've put this to the test buy going through the buy miles process, entering my membershop number (minutes old) and able to get to the page to enter my credit card details.

I'm a bit hesitant to go any further. Any advice?
Should i just try, snd see if it works, or i might get a rejection message???

You WILL be able to 'complete' the transaction, and your credit card WILL be authorised for the USD amount.

HOWEVER - no miles will post to your account (ever, for this transaction).

Any calls to the US Airways centre will advise you that you are under the 12 day requirement.

you will then need to wait the alloted period your credit card provider keeps authorisations for before you are able to get acces to that money again.

Most people think because the card has been authorised the transaction has been completed - but this is not the case. This happened to me much earlier when I bought miles at the 10 day period (when you had to wait 10 days) and I was actually a day early (i counted form the day I opened the account, not the next day... I was charged twice, only the second transaction gave me the miles, and I waited 10 days for the first authorisation to come back as available credit on my card).

The rules are pretty strict on this offer.

However - the good news is that having signed up you'll be ready to go if they announce another round of offers :)

FT reports suggest that the purchase will go through but then be reversed out the next day.

Perhaps you have a friend or relative with an older account who could gift you?

think we posted at the same time :)

The miles will not post - so nothing to be 'reversed' so to speak. But the CC authorisation will stay for x number of days (depends on yuor particular CC provider and their terms for holding authorisatins).
