Thanks bcworld and MEL_Traveller.

I did SYD-ICN-FRA-BKK-SYD in J last October.

120k miles to Europe makes more sense then spending 90k miles to Asia, for sure.

bmi Diamond Club is a better option for flights to Asia...and is still an option until the end of May if you have plans in mind.

I recently booked the following MEL-BKK-PVG(TG J)(stopover & surface)PEK-KIX(NH J) as a single one way award.

18750 miles (would cost about $380)
+$575 in fees, taxes and YQ.

A family account can be used to get more miles into a single account.

EXCLUSIVE OFFER - Offer expires: 20 Jan 2025

Can you give me links or threads I could read about that? I'm looking at travel in May. Just to BKK and back. Thanks.

available on BMI website. You can buy the number of miles you need, however this needs to be done quickly as they have now left star alliance and you can only redeem miles until 31 May (I'm guessing for tickets up to one year in advance).

You'll need to sign up 2 accounts immediately. One for you...and one for a partner, child, parent or domestic slave. This is because each account can buy only 24,000 miles per year. You can make yourself head of the family and invite the others to give you the ability to transfer their miles to you. Like US they mention a time limit (14 days) before you can buy miles...they don't say you can't just that there might be extra checking...whatever that means??

Bmi offers part cash part miles redemptions...for SYD<>BKK return you'll need:

37500 + £255 + taxes/YQ (bmi charges fuel surcharges unlike US) for Business.

For a simple SYD-BKK-SYD on TG the taxes/YQ will be about £240.

Assuming you need to buy 37000 miles (if they give you 1000 just for signing up) they will cost £474

Total = £969 or about A$1500.

I thought my parents joined and bought miles straight away?

They probably did...it just warns that for accounts younger than 14 days there may be additional checking...without mentioning why or what that means.

ah, ok thanks :)

Actually I take it back...what it actually says is:

It may take up to one business day (up to three days for purchases on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays) for your newly purchased miles to be available for an online award booking. It may take up to two business days for newly purchased miles to be available for new members with less than 14 days tenure. A confirmation email will be sent to you to confirm the transaction is completed.

Should be fine.

yup - that sounds familiar!

happened that with with my folks... took ~36 hours for the miles to post

I found it strange that I received the confirmation for the buy points about 4 days ago but my statement issued today has a nil balance - checked straightway online and the points are in the account as per the email from earlier in the week. Funky system

I wonder what alliance they will end up with * or one world if they go with the * alliance one world will be screwed as they will not have a partner in North America

It would be OneWorld for sure...no doubt about that.
