TG F A380 loooooooooks verrrrrry verrrrrrrry nice ;)

Don't go nuts - it's just a suite config. Of course it looks markedly different to their current F, but IMHO TG F have some way to go with respect to the rest of their product.

I am guessing this is going to be a no but has anyone tried a route similar to the following:

MEL-MAA(destination)-NRT(stopover)-MEL (or in the opposite direction)
90k in Business Class

Now these flights would have to go via Singapore or Bangkok so I am thinking it wouldn't be allowed as the stopover isn't on the direct route home. But if anyone has done something like this before let me know. I might try a call to the call centre and see but I am not hopeful.

Unfortunately i think it's going to fail either way. IF they agree MAA is farther away from MEL than NRT, and treat that as your destination, the return stopover would be ineligible because it is not on the most direct routing back.

Alternatively if you wanted MAA as a stopover, it would fail because it is not a star alliance hub.

MEL-BKK/SIN-NRT is fine, and you can pick up tiger out of SIN for about $274 return.

Exactly, that's how I did it for a trip that was just completed yesterday. Booked my parents 2 seats in J to LHR, then the next day did the other 2 people :D

Did you secure direct flights to LHR? If so do you mind if I ask what month?

I still have 240K US miles to burn and at the moment I don't have much opportunity to burn them. My only worry is that if they merge with AA and moved to OW I think it would be much harder to redeem awards. I don't want to redeem it 300+ days in advance. I prefer availability of TG/OZ etc to Europe ....
This is hardly going to happen overnight, I think you'll probably have a fair amount of time to redeem, I'm thinking about 6 months at a minimum.

Edison, I am in the same situation, have 240k now for 2 business return to Europe, looking to use mid 2013, so hopefully there is no devaluing or merging between now and the end of the year when I will look to book the tickets in.

AA management is presenting its plan to the bankruptcy court at any moment now.

I think that it is doubtful that anyone has the numbers to influence the judge and do anything other than accept this plan. And remember (in the “could only happen in America” category) AA is basically bank rolling its own bankruptcy.

So, the judge will probably extend chapter 11 protections through until at least September this year.

Creditors will have the ensuing time to monitor and evaluate the progress of the plan, and US Airways will have time to consolidate an offer that it thinks AA creditors & the court (and possibly even shareholders:shock:) will like more than what AA management is delivering.

Baring any significant catastrophe a merger is far off, but it seems that both US & AA management are posturing for a do or die battle to see who takes over whom, when forming the future mega airline, and who is out of a job.

I booked two TG J to LHR recently for the first week of school holidays in late September. It's an open jaw MEL-BKK-LHR, BRU-BKK-MEL.

Here's a quick one for anyone that has flown these planes/routes, which would you choose:

SYD-BKK-KIX
Straight connection through depart 4:30pm arrive 6:00am next day
On the refitted 747 and 777-300 in business class

SYD-AKL-NRT
SYD-AKL on 763, overnight at AKL Novotel
Day flight AKL-NRT on 772 arriving at 4:00pm

Now originally I was thinking the NZ flight as we will be most refreshed and the product is better on the 772 than the TG planes, but it is a day flight so no use for the bed, how are the seats for sitting up? Can you share a meal with your partner? Also trying to get sleep on the 5hr leg from BKK-KIX may be hard but we end up with a whole extra day in Japan. So a bit of a trade off there.

So which would you choose!?

I recently booked a flight in VS upper class which has a very similar seat, if not identical to the NZ 772. From many of the reviews I've read the seat is really all about the bed with the recline and range of positions in seat mode is actually quite poor. One of the notable improvements VS have made in the just released new version is to improve the recline. Ultimately I think the NZ option might be a bit more leisurely and I doubt you will get a decent sleep on the BKK-KIX leg...although in your position I have normally booked the overnight flights that maximise time at the destination - sometimes that day ends up being a write off though!!

Argh! You have just reinforced my indecisiveness bcworld! Haha, first world problem I know, but would be easier if I didn't have choice and just had to go with the one available. I guess the big question is would we make use of the extra half a day we would have. Also looking at the NZ seats it doesn't look that conducive to travelling with a partner, especially on a day flight when you want to talk to each other. Hmmm....

Happy to hear more arguments either way!

If you're planning to spend your day flight watching films and talking and sharing the meal, then NZ may not be for you.

TG will be much better for those sorts of things... oh wait... those are night flights!! its all too hard!!!

I would go with the option that gives you the extra time in Japan. NZs seats are far better for sleeping. Most people sleep after the meal etc but if that's really not your thing then go the other way. As for eating as a couple, the ottoman is tiny. Not comfortable.

So I have booked SYD-BKK-KIX on TG 747 All Series (refurbished) and 777-300 in Business Class. I now also have on hold CTS-BKK (A330) stopover BKK-MEL (777-200ER) all on TG. My big question is how many of Thai's A330's have the 'new' business class product rather than old style recliners? As I also have the option of doing CTS-NRT-BKK on a UA 747 with their newer seats. Which would you take? The flight times are all pretty comparable. I would have to get up a bit earlier to get from Niseko to CTS for the Thai flight which leaves at 10:45am as opposed to the CTS-NRT-BKK (NH and UA) option which departs CTS at 2:00pm.

Interestingly the CTS-BKK flights aren't actually loaded booking wise on any search engines (including Thai's website) but I have been able to put award seats on hold, they are starting this route in October.

I would take UA without hesitation. even with the 'new' seats, TG is angled lie flat. UA is full flat. plus UA has the later departure time. TGs service isn't that good (or UA's service that bad) to warrant taking TG for this flight.

Don't know if this has been answered before, but how do we find out/get more information about TG 747's that service SYD-BKK.

It really depends what you want to know... the flight I believe is scheduled to operate as a 'new' aircraft (10 F) but is sometimes substituted for the older version (14F). TG is however well known for substituting aircraft, even up to the day of departure. If you are in F i wouldn't be worried, but that is a personal preference... I like the old seats as much as the new (the new ones have zero privacy for sleeping). The potential for aircraft substitution just makes choosing a seat more difficult.

There is a discussion over on FT in the Thai Airways forum.

This isn't really correct. What I am talking about is the refurbished 747 All series, 9 nnew suites in first and 40 llie flat seats in business compared to the very, very old configuration. The 14F wwill no longer exist.
