Well, almost a success
Partner and I are going to Europe in May 2015, back in June 2015 so too early to book inbound flights but we thought we'd better grab first class flights while they are available at the 330 days mark booking a dummy flight back then changing it later paying the $150 change fee. The difficulty also was that he wants to go to London first and the on to St.Petersburg and I want to go straight to St.Petersburg
so his booking is SYD-MEL-DXB-LHR on QF in first, back the same thing but in economy (to be changed later to an open jaw LED-somewhere-SYD), $293 in tax, all confirmed

me - hesitating about getting on QF9 leaving on 05 May as it was not ideal and while I was thinking it was gone in 24 hours...so I ended up on SYD-HKG-LHR on CX (business to HGK and first to LHR) coming back (a dummy one to be changed later to LED-somewhere-SYD) LHR-DXB-MEL-SYD in first...all confirmed on the phone, points taken from the account, quoted taxes of $430 (I did not query that then as I just wanted it ticketed but now I'm thinking it's a way way too high, it sounds like I was hit with a fuel surcharge on CX flights so I'll be calling back and questioning it)

almost a a success as I haven't got an email confirmation even if I was told it would come in 10 min, neither can I see it ticketed on the US Airways website. There is a booking, I can find it by the PNR given but there is no ticket number. Also, it has a MH PNR in it which obviously has to do with my original choice on MH flights SYD-KUL-LHR which two agents could not see at all yesterday and today's agent could but could not confirm so I dropped it and went with plan B on CX

I'm going to give it 24 hours and see if it gets ticketed. If not then on the phone with US Airways I go tomorrow ....

it is actually a bit frustrating as my partner got his booking all done in 10 mins not a single glitch and I have been on the phone for essentially the same thing for 2 days with 3 agents and still did not get it right..

P.S. I could not get the agent today add a LHR-LED flight to the outbound combination of flights as she said it was backtracking within the same zone and prohibited. It kind of is but has not been very strictly applied (LHR-MEL-SYD is strictly speaking backtracking as well) and I questioned it but got told categorically it was not allowed and she even double checked it with a supervisor and said no. So I'll probably be getting a LHR-LED one way for cash or maybe on Lifemiles (LH via Frankfurt)

Is the ticket returning from the UK? Cos that's probably the APD and not fuel surcharge.

I know about the APD, it's not it. My partner's taxes for the essentially same routing are $293 and mine are $430 so there's an extra $137 there...,unless they forgot to charge him the APD

Ticketing is pretty much instant with USDM. If the current MH PNR is there and they haven't changed it i would be following up with them.

Backtracking is permitted within a zone, but maybe they have determined that a 1317 mile flight is a little too far? Is there also a stop in London? If so, they may have determined that the stopover is not on the most direct route.

Finally sorted it out. Ticketed, the final taxes were $431.91 so obviously no surcharges but a higher APD

Put your PNR into the QR MMB on their website dvd it will tell you the breakdown of the taxes!

Book Flights from Australia
Thanks

QR does not like my US Airways PNR

but I checked it on Saudia by the e-ticket number, no surcharges.

the reservation did not ticket because US Airways did not like my ANZ Amex card that I used before to purchase the points! So had to give them a Visa and it worked

USDM will give you a minimum of 2 PNR's. One will be the US one, visible in the USDM site, another will be the CX one, it's different and that's he one that will work on the QR website!

If you have a MH flight that too will have a different PNR but will show on the CX PNR only in the QR MMB! Won't show in the CX website.

Booked today for April 2015: LHR - SYD (QF, F) // SYD - HKG (QF, J) - PEK (KA, F) // PEK - LHR (BA, F) - total 300K miles for 2pax, taxes ~ $1,620.

I have seen the few sucessful GUM itineraries which are encouraging!

Just wondering if a PER-ROR trip would be possible?
JAL flies NRT-ROR so theoretically its possible - just wonder if it would be breaking MPM or anything else?

TIA

Agent couldn't see any availability to ROR, well she could but couldn't put it all together and I didn't want to pay the high points so I left it

I did book SYD-(y)-NOU-(j)SYD x 2 for 55000 points and total approx aud$400 including agent booking fee as well as SYD-(J)-CHC-(y)-SYD x 2 also 55000 points and about aud$300 inc all fees.

Not the best use of points, I didn't want to go too far from home, so that if Mum needs me I'm not far or away long and given USDM is difficult to get on to when I rebook our trip to Europe I will probably use QF points for the ease of searching, changing and communication… that is unless awardtravelr comes back online.

NRT-ROR are not regular flights - they are special charter flights that can only be booked a few months in advance. I doubt they make these seats available for partner awards.

SYD-(J)-CHC-(y)-SYD x 2 also 55000 points and about aud$300 inc all fees.

QF 737?! Thats an extremely poor use of points.

None of this seems to really make sense. SWP-SWP in J should be 30,000 points per person. So should be 60,000 points for each trip for 2 people. Also for a straight point to point the taxes + booking fee do seem high but I haven't checked on ITA.

We were planning to fly to CHC with points anyway. It was cheaper to book using USDM than using QFFP and flying JQ, we could have just paid in cash I guess but I already spent the money for the points. Considering when we went to AKL in April the +1 paid over $1200 for JQ y flights, I think he will be happy with the $300 and J one way…

having said that - I can't tell the difference in planes except for A380, jumbo jets and the little qantaslink ones that take me to Dubbo. Everything else is the same to me. Some just have more rows of seats than others (i.e. scoot crams you in).

I am just happy that I get to go on holidays, I will get a $500 TRS refund on the July trip (had to leave by 26th July to get it).

I looked on the one world website for the days nrt-ror operated and she looked at those dates, she could see the flights but didn't say if it was available because I couldn't get flights to meet it. We didn't put too much effort into looking for it because the +1 doesn't have a whole heap of time and we want to go to ROR so he can dive (not me I am too scared) so having long connections in Asia just wouldn't be suitable. I tried for PPT and even RAR because up until june 29th airNZ is still bookable but PPT of course is excluded as was RAR she said. so no real options. NOU was fine and CHC is about getting a holiday for the cost of our TRS amount.

she did 25000/2 + 30000/2 = 27500 for the mixed class. I was expecting 60,000 in j or 50,000 in y for 2 people but I got 55,000 on NOU so I went with it.
I assumed QF would have higher taxes because I just assumed it would be that airline that did (i mean for QFFP taxes are pretty high)
to NOU we have 152.33 + 50 each in USD and then NZ is $136.68+50 each in USD.
I almost didn't book NZ because you can get it cheaper with sale fares on JQ but its within the TRS time frame so we even out anyway. I think my credit card has a poor exchange rate because its $826 thats been deducted. I may have purchased something else but I don't remember
