300 million people, many of whom are quite amazing. And yet this is what they end up with.

Of course, there are similarities closer to home.

The electorate gets the politicians it deserves, our politicians are a reflection of ourselves.

Every time I feel a bit sad, I watch this video;

It's the best, I'm laughing watching it right now haha.

But do we?

Que ?? please elucidate this very pregnant statement

I will grant you that - the USA deserves whoever they elect.

But do we?
Given we have compulsory voting we get what the majority of voters in a majority of seats decide. In the US & UK, where not compulsory, they get who people that can be bothered participating vote for. But at the end of the (election) day we get what we voted for overall, although some may be bitterly disappointed (here & US).

But do we?

Yes we do, the counter argument to compulsory voting is that only those who are motivated by genuine issues bother to vote.

Counter argument back is that voting is not compulsory, in practice only turning up to collect a ballot paper, and what you do with that ballot paper, whether you mark it or not, is entirely up to the individual. If not motivated, can always just leave it blank.

You still have to turn up though, which is the worst part of voting. 😂

No, no, no ..... I meant do we (as in Australia and the rest of the world for that matter) deserve Trump?

[ BTW - apart from having some overlap between the three levels of government, we have a great democratic system. But garbage in = garbage out ]

isn’t that like asking do we ( A+ RotW) deserve Brexit? Or Venezuela. Or James Buchanan.

I don’t understand the angst. Don’t like him? Just ignore him. The only time he comes across my radar is when those that don’t like/ hate/ despise him have their little meltdowns in the media ( and occasionally on AFF) 🙃. I did the same with Obama, and it worked for me ( didn’t let him stress me out).

I'm struggling with your comparisons.

Brexit - has that started a trade war?
Venezuela - have they escalated conflicts in the Middle East?
James Buchanan - was he a serial sexual predator and liar?

And apart from being POTUS, I can find no similarity between Trump and Obama.

As in, Australia has as much control over the election (‘deserving’) of Trump as it had over the things I listed. My attitude to Trump is much the same as that to Obama.

Obsessing about Trump or anything we can’t control us just pointless.

Trump derangement syndrome is a thing.

I listened to that press conference. America is the greatest you don’t really need to know much else.

First death in the US reported by USAtoday in Washington State. Trump to say something in a few hours time.
California is getting 1200 test kits to replace their first 200 that were all used last week.

Let’s keep this thread on topic - take your baggage to another counter and drop it there.

Usually I detest political baggage. And people could refrain from calling him the “orange one”. But it is relevant that the US Secretary of State won’t state it is not a hoax. Forgetting the politics maybe the whole thing is a hoax. It’s one scenario. But I’m inclined that think that it is 99.999999% certain that it is the real deal.

Trump said the virus is a democrat hoax at a rally and Pence doesn't believe in science.

The USA is not prepared for this, especially with their health system.
