So there are separate curtains that partition off 5AC, 5HK and 5DFG??? Now that would be very private indeed! :o
Also some times a little awkward. Flying in such closed and private quarters with someone you don't know.

I have been in both 5H & 5K and with strangers next to me. The first time was with a lady of mid sixties age. It felt a little awkward as I was in 5K and she went to sleep with the chair made up and I had no idea how to do it without disturbing her. Luckily I very helpful flight attendent came to the rescue and made up my bed without disturbing the lady. He said they are trained for this sort of thing.

The privacy in 5AC and 5HK would be brilliant for couples! Hmm...methinks a change from 1AC to 5AC may be in order. ;)

Yep. It's outstanding.
If you're travelling alone, my advice would be go for C or H, that way you've got direct aisle access (and a curtain to look at) and noone to climb over.
It'd be excellent if you managed a shadow as well. In my opinion for a flight I am going to try to sleep on, row 5 is more conducive as you don't have lighting coming from everywhere and people moving around the cabin all the time.

Lots of yoga?

So, would the consensus be that 5AC is better than 1AC if travelling with a companion?

Without a doubt. We have used both and and after we first used row 5 we always select this row

Yip! Most definitly - even travelling solo, I go for 5D or 5G - in my experience, the occupants of the other two seats (5FG/5DF) are generally travelling together and use 'their side' to access the aisle.

Row 5 is reserved for pre-allocation by Platinums only. The only way you'll have a chance is at the airport to change.

I am only Gold and I was able to reserve it on the internet when I only had 2 seats booked, when I shifted my dad from Y+ to J the lady on the phone offered to shift us to the 3 seat only in row 5, still 6mths out from flight so hope it holds

Lucky we are all different - personally I hate Row 5 - tried it once early and felt way to claustro - there were spare seats so I shifted to 3D from memory.

AND

Being the sticky beak I am I like to see what is happening in entirety of cabin if possible - stuck back there in never never land just so boring - but YMMV

Well, we really don't want everyone picking row 5, so I consider it a good thing that you don't like it.

I guess there may be a few Melbournians (like myself) out of the row 5 picture too :(

And I should have added that those of you who are contemplating Row 5 better start your 'shooshing' - some of tend to become somewhat rowdy post the meal service and there is unlimited free plonk on offer at the bar! Don't worry thought - you cam always catch up on your sleep the night after you get off that flight!

This has been my trick. Then eye the person in 5A with the shadow jealously. If you go for D it is on the opposite side of the toilet so even if you do wind up with someone in FG who are not a couple they tend to clamber over the other person anyway.
