VA to HKG from Jul 5 2017, ex MEL

Brisbane is probably unlikely due to issues with rotating A330s in Brisbane (they only fly BNE selected flights), No A330 maintenance facility and why launch Brisbane when you can do Melbourne (larger premium market).

Looking forward to hopefully some great launch fares!

Any news on this yet? Hanging out to book flights to London via HKG.

Also would this new route be considered a short or long haul flight? Hoping to use my platinum upgrades if possible on this trip.

I've never flown the A330 in economy. How does the product compare for a longer international run compared to the smaller domestic runs they do now?

Is it comparable to the QF A330 in terms of comfort, seat etc...

I flew over the last couple of days from MEL to PER and back in Y.
On the way over the A330 felt a touch cramped. The layout is 2 4 2, i was originally in the aisle on a 2 with someone next to me, really cramped in, knees touching seat in front. However after the last cabin door moved to a 4 aisle with double shadow. The best part was the plentiful bathrooms, and in seat entertainment with usb and AC power in seats.
On the way back flew the 737-800 with 3 3 layout. Was stuck in a window seat, flight packed. However I think the seat pitch was more comfortable and I was ok. No in seat entertainment, no power and only two toilets down the back.

Virgin Australia announces flights from Melbourne to Hong Kong

Virgin Australia today announced it will commence services between Melbourne and Hong Kong, expanding its international footprint into Greater China for the first time.

From 5 July 2017, Virgin Australia will operate five return services per week between the two cities, using dual aisle Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Virgin Australia’s proposed alliance with HNA Aviation and Hong Kong Airlines will enable customers to connect through Hong Kong to 13 destinations in mainland China. It will also allow guests from Hainan Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Capital Airlines and Tianjin Airlines to connect onto Virgin Australia’s expansive domestic and trans-Tasman network.

Today’s announcement follows the ACCC’s interim approval of Virgin Australia’s proposed alliance with HNA Aviation, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express. The Virgin Australia flights are on sale subject to obtaining final regulatory approval from the ACCC.

Virgin Australia’s Airbus A330-200 fleet features the airline’s award-winning Business Class suites, ‘The Business’, which was recently recognised as the world’s best Business Class by Airline Ratings, as well as 255 economy seats in a 2-4-2 configuration.

Virgin Australia Group CEO John Borghetti said: “Virgin Australia’s entry into Hong Kong and Greater China is a key pillar of our international strategy, allowing us to tap into Australia’s fastest growing and most valuable inbound travel market.

“Awarded the world’s most liveable city for the past six years, Melbourne is an international city in its own right and hosts some of Australia’s biggest and most spectacular events. We look forward to showcasing this great city to inbound visitors from Hong Kong and beyond.

“The Virgin Australia livery flying to Hong Kong for the first time is an exciting development and with it brings the style and sophistication that is synonymous with our brand.

“Travellers to and from Hong Kong will be able to fly in the world’s best business class and dine on a restaurant-in-the-sky experience designed by resident chef Luke Mangan. Coupled with service delivered by the world’s best cabin crew, we know guests travelling on this route from July will appreciate the effortless luxury that comes with Virgin Australia,” Mr Borghetti said.

Velocity Frequent Flyer members will be able to earn Velocity Points and Status Credits on these flights, while details of reciprocal frequent flyer benefits and lounge access will be announced at a later date together with codeshare arrangements.

Far from ideal. It's clear there were issues getting slots as the schedule is frankly a dog's breakfast.

Hopefully once established VA will be able to renegotiate slots to get a consistent timetable going. Right now you would be planning your meetings around VA's schedule and not the other way round. Or more likely, booking with CX...

I fear for the future of the route, it has to work to justify wasting so much time on the ground. But the crazy timetable is going to make it harder for them.

After getting excited, this is honestly hard to work around. I would have at least expected a consistent departure/arrival time and a daily service. This does look more like a slots issue more than aircraft availability issue though so hopefully they improve it over time.

But I genuinely hope this works and will do what I can to support it and hopefully gives HNA more confidence in dry leasing wide bodies to VA for more routes into Asia.

Be interesting to see if a price war kicks off on this route now. Wouldn't surprise me if QF & CX try to kill this off.

It's rather odd that they are choosing to leave the plane in HKG for the whole day 3 times a week. I don't think it's exactly a cheap place to park a plane either. Another problem is that it arrives into HKG a little too late for those who require a 9am start in the office.

Too difficult to do a turn into China with all the delays, they could do TPE and MNL comfortably in the future but probably can't now to avoid stealing HNA traffic
