Is anyone able to search a one-way fare originating in Hong Kong? I've tried searching but can't seem to get the search function to pick up Hong Kong as the outbound city on the one-way fare

That would be a negative . No Hong Kong in there as an originating airport . That is something they need to get the work experience kid onto.

I am hoping this will gradually build to more flight as i am hoping they will lease more aircarft from there new shere holders.??

Not sure the Chinese airlines have many spare frames... They are all growing like crazy, hence CXs issues
And only own a small %ge of VAH

More likely they will pinch another A330 from the east west rotations. Surely they are not expecting that 5 scattered weekly flights will be their saving grace?

I messaged VA on FB last night and they have come back and said one way flights ex HKG will be available on their website over the next few days .

Anyone curious there hasn't been more promotion for the new route, such as a sale fare or even a mention of the flights on the airline's website? It seems strange to have announced MEL-HKG, commenced ticket sales and then ... nothing. Am I missing something here? Interested to hear your thoughts out there.

I think they will reveal cheaper and more sale fares once everything is revealed, especially regarding the relationship with other HNA carriers, more specifically HX for onward connections.

If you do a search on google flights, you can somehow get it to book through virgin australia.. eg. for 5th of July:

Has anyone managed to find any reward availability? I've been waiting for this route to go on sale to burn a bunch of points on a J reward return in July. I did dummy bookings all through the year and even up to Jan 31st 2018. Nothing.

Was thinking just the same thing today. Where's the promotion ?? Such a shame they don't done fly Fridays to HKG or Sundays to Melbourne. Hopefully it will go 7 days a week once established

If its all a leisure trip, you could go via NZ one way maybe?
MEL - AKL - HKG (NZ) - HKG - MEL (VA)... or vv.
