Re: Mitolo Cantiniere - First Thoughts
I wouldn't normally open my reds at such a young age, but given the angst on this forum about the Mitolo, I felt the need to decide for myself whether it was a keeper.
Disclaimer: I have purchased a large collection of wine from Vinomofo over the years and have yet to make a return - some have been better than others, but to date all have been an acceptable quality for the bottle price (or at least not horrible enough to overcome my inherent laziness). Fortunately or unfortunately, this means that my collection has swelled to over 800 bottles, so I have long-forgotten which ones I didn't enjoy the first time around.
I received my six pack this morning and was lucky enough to be working from home today, so I quickly popped the case into my wine room where it has been sitting comfortably at a climate-controlled 15C.
Having poured a glass through a Vinturi aerator and allowed it to breathe at room temperature for 15 minutes, my initial thoughts are:
In summary, I don't think this one is a particularly complex wine nor one that I believe will improve with 15+ years of cellaring, but it is certainly a wine that will pair well with rich food and I think will be enjoyed in the company of friends that prefer a lighter red.
Anyways, that's my two cents.

- visually, it is an extremely dark purple (almost inky black) with significant legs on the glass
- on the nose, it is somewhat sweet and dominated by black cherries and a hint of spiciness
- on the palate, it is very light and I find quite balanced - certainly on the lighter end of the shiraz spectrum. Very much a fruit-forward style with tart acidity and a hint of chocolate rather than spice and tannins
- main negative is the heat from the high alcohol content that dominates the entire experience
In summary, I don't think this one is a particularly complex wine nor one that I believe will improve with 15+ years of cellaring, but it is certainly a wine that will pair well with rich food and I think will be enjoyed in the company of friends that prefer a lighter red.
