Vinomofo Wine Deals

I misidentified a black market deal and have ended up with Willoughby Park Kalgan Ironbock shiraz 2012. Anyone else have this? With a signup discount ended up paying $20 a bottle = can anyone comment on whether its a good drop for the price (worth keeping?). I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

I brought out a bottle to try at a dinner party - guests liked it so much I had to open another. Down to 4 bottles now, and would consider buying another 6 pack if it came back.

Is the Mitolo causing some issues? I thought I had only seen positive responses by those who have tried it on this forum?

Tanny15 and Beefarmer (to name the more recent posts) have given some fairly positive, but qualified opinions, on the Mitolo Cantiniere. I did too last week.

It's fine for the $20 odd price paid (although some might argue - it should be cheaper - given the excellent F&H and FG wines recently sold through the Fo for under a Tenner a bottle).

My biggest problem with Mitolo Gate was the $68 RRP price, the flagship tag and the delay (during which time a new web page was put up on the wine, which may have been - I am not saying it was - a defensive position because of the obvious questionmarks Fo customers were raising). There was an insinuation this was going to be bigger and better than it was, when in fact it turned out to be a pleasant, light mid-week drinking Shiraz. I could taste the more sweeter elements - the coconuts, etc - but they were standing out against the more meatier tastes too. It wasn't totally polished and coherent, hence why I politely said it was a bit funky.

I am keeping the remaining 5 bottles, but I must admit I am going to be very careful in the future over what I purchase from the Fo. I have lost a little bit of confidence in them, but I am sure the Fo will come back with some excellent offers to restore that confidence.

So conflicted on whether to do nothing, get more, or get the Jones Block everyone's raving about.

Well this is my problem.....I didn't want a mid week red and fell for the flagship and RRP and premium tags..
as I said looks like mine will be going back without even tasting on principle alone

hang on ..ill might just keep one bottle for the stuffing around ...lol

We opened one last night, certainly needs the decanter or vinturi..

Really looks the business in the glass, dark, long legs.

Red fruit upfront in abundance. Some people have said fruit bomb and that's probably a fair description.

Lacks any real finish.

Bottle disappeared quickly enough though..

Agree ... I decanted the wine and it did open up a little after a few hours compared to when I tasted it not long out of the bottle. It kinda reminded me of the Lofty SV a little. I think it tasted a little better on the second day as well.
I agree with you Wozza; while it's a nice wine, the price point is a problem, and so too was the way it was marketed. If it was priced the same as the Glenlofty then we'd probably be talking about it in more positive light.

I received my Ironrock last week. I enjoyed the wine. It's nothing spectacular, but very enjoyable. Here are my tasting notes:

A competent, well composed Shiraz. In some ways it reminds me of the fruit forward Penfolds 389s from the mid 90’s, but without the oak sledgehammer I seem to recall, or regrettably the length of finish. Pepper and spice on the nose with a hint of the french oak bleeding through. A soft and delicate mouthfeel, with an almost velvety texture. Layers of berry, earth and spice along with a hint of vanilla. Beautifully integrated sweet tannins and oak. Nice complexity but it’s just missing a touch on the length, otherwise immaculate. A very enjoyable wine.

How many bottles of Mitolo have been cracked out of curiosity.
Mine came yesterday and I cracked one a few hours ago ,but won't try it until tucker time this evening.

Try giving it a day or so open before trying. I picked up the 2011 version and found it to be a fantastic wine, however it needs some time open before consumption. There was a noticeable difference between a freshly opened bottle compared to one that's been open a couple of days.

Luckily enough I've a bottle opened Sunday awaiting my evening.

If this is an example of a wine that is nothing spectacular, and I do like your tasting notes , give me an idea of your recent superstar wines that you could compare with this Shiraz.

Certainly sounds like decent drop - definitely a keeper!

I found Chappy's comments interesting. Would you guys actually suggest that there are wines that benefit from opening a few days earlier from drinking, rather than just decanting shortly before? I am certainly far from a wine connoisseur, but this one is a new one to me. Have I misunderstood?

The fo got back to me and I have to say, their customer service is exceptional. They've told me to try a couple of bottles and see if I think it's affected and they're happy to take the rest back if I'm not satisfied. I'm planning on trying one tomorrow night (the bottle that got the hottest), then another on the weekend after 12+ hours decanting. If it seems fine I'll put the rest down, otherwise I'll send it back and pick up a case of something else (probably the fox Gordon everyone is raving about).

yes the alcohol heat is way over powering...or is it the Sulphur?
