Using RB's clue, Star Lane Shiraz?

From one of my subscribers in a thread on Star Lane Shiraz 2012:
"I just received some wine reviews from Tony Keys, and he has tasted the 2013 version.
No mention of acid. He is happy with $45, but he probably didn't open his wallet with his hard earned reddies.

Star Lane Beechworth Shiraz 2013: It could be smelt in the glass from a distance, beautiful nose, part herb part wild flower part something else I couldn’t pin. Very cool on entry and stays restrained on its journey but it fills on the return journey. Far from full maturity so a mean 93 now with a couple more down the track and $45 is about the right price for individuality."

So the 93 pt Tony Keys score matches and the 14.2% quoted alcohol is typical of Star Lane Reds.

Hrmmm... I'm tossing up if the $600 to $185 "Premium BM Shiraz Line Up 1.0" is worth it. On the one hand, it'll be good to get a mixed case at a good discount. On the other hand, they'll pad the case out with a few not really worth the 70% discount. I suppose it still is a 70% discount though, how wrong can you be at such prices right?

Blackmarket is usually 70% off so it's a question of whether you want the variety that the line up has to offer.

Hmm I'm also quite tempted with this one since I've been meaning to try a few different Shiraz. I was hoping for some more variety in it though, since there's no shortage of shiraz flowing through VM. Might be worth it to try something different but you're right about being worried it'll be padded with some less desirable stuff.

Thanks Redbigot.

I haven't tried the Star Lane Shiraz, but, that description above is compelling, and, if it is as well made and packaged as the Star Lane Merlot the Fo recently sold me, then it should be a good deal.

The Merlot was definitely a good Aussie Merlot (if you like Merlot, which I know many don't). It was under cork, came in a fancy box with the wines laid down, and the wine was very up together (unlike another wine I won't mention that has been getting us all animated to various degrees).

If I hadn't put an order in on the WineMarket bubbles offer (see the DM and others thread), then I would be in the market for a fairly confident punt on this one ...

But Halliday rates Star Lane 5 stars, not 5 red stars. Given VM make such a fuss of the 5 red star winery in the banner, I don't think it can be Star Lane. Not that I have a better idea at the moment, though. And it's possible that VM simply made a mistake by putting the 5 red stars in the banner...

Probably. But also VM states this is a $60 wine, whereas Tony Keys states this is a $45 wine. TK might be wrong, as the 2010 vintage is $50 from Star Lane's website...

I just bought a case. If two of them are absolute crackers, then anything else is a bonus. Probably can't go wrong on this one!

oh...when I checked the star lane website...there was no 2013 vintage listed
and now there is ...and yes its sold out.....mmm?

If you're like me and like aromatic wines that does something a little different while still having the typical bold shiraz body, then I think you'll enjoy the Star Lane. For the 'Fo price you can't really go wrong.

Re: Vinomofo Offer Helen and Joeys Layla Pint Noir 2013

Hi all Pinophiles. I note that this wine has been offered for some time.I have searched for opinions or reviews with only limited success. I think Beefarmer commented favourably in a post some time ago.
Any comments to assist my purchasing decision would be appreciated. In their VM price ranges, I have recently enjoyed the Duck Sauce 2014 and the Riposte En Garde. A well cellared 1997 Mt Mary Pinot was developed, but drinking beautifully. It confirmed the longevity potential of some Oz pinots. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I received the Layla in a mixed pack recently which I bought when sending back the Black Market Tomich. Had both the Duck Sauce and Riposte En Garde and found them quite drinkable for the price, but had the Layla last weekend and didn't finish the bottle. Was drinkable but IMO a bit lacking. However, Pinot is a personal taste and can seem quite different with different foods (or without). I was tempted to look at more of the Duck Sauce which I think you can still buy, although as a daily staple my inhouse Pinotphile is reasonably happy with the cleanskin Central Otago chalkboard which retails from LL et al for around the same price.

I think based on the above I might pass on this one :/ still a little scarred by my Mitolo (which i don't mind as a wine but don't like as a concept.)
