Vinomofo Wine Deals

Any ideas on the Gundagai Shiraz? Was thinking its an A. Retief with reference to the Winemaker coming from the Hunter, but cant find a 94 point Halliday Shiraz from them.

Did anyone receive and try the Glenlofty Shiraz Vognier '13 from last week? I passed based on the quality of the '13 shiraz, but still curious on opinions.

Ordered but their tracker has delivery slated in a another week or so.

I also ordered (on advice from the broker) and have a drunk a bottle of Hilltops Cab Sav 2014 ... easy drinking cheap quaffer.

man o man..you have me really excited here......the 2013 was sublime !!
you pretty sure its the Gundagai Hungerford? obviously, but what hints?

Says Hunter Valley producer, and 2013 vintage got 94 JH points.

Only two Gundagai wines got 94+ JH points for the 2013 vintage, and out of those, only one is a Hunter Valley producer - Hungerford Hill. Plus VM had the 2013 Gundagai as well as other Hungerford Hill wines last year.

the 2013 was my second favourite wine of 2015 !

Now you've got my interest. If you think this is better than the Fox Gordon Brothers & Sisters it must be a pretty nice wine indeed.

I think I sampled the hungerford hill Shiraz today at the Sydney cellar door...
I sampled and bought a lot though, so I may be confused...

Just on their site though and everything matches...might have to boom again on this one

Edit : yep boom for me

Yep, better than all but one other last year, that being the shelmerdine merindoc 2010 shiraz.

That is my taste world of course but I ranked this one better than Tomich I-777 which I adored, better than a filsell, go figure as I look through my tasting notes I see a few others last year, Amelia park reserve, churchview all of them, zema cabernet 2009, tyrells vat 1,Lehman mentor Cab 2010,Fox creeks 2013 shiraz, Hill of Grace 2001, Crikey have I gone mad?

This is a purely subjective assessment of course but I call it as I see it, or rather as I taste it. Yes, the Fox Gordon cabernet is a stunner and I bought 2 cases. The cab/temp is also a beauty DB.

I just hope the 2014 Hungerford Hill Shiraz lives up to my expectations otherwise it may have to go back to Gundagai and the tuckerbox.

Methinks there's something wrong there. If you go to the Tahbilk website most of those bottles of Marsanne are under $20.

Yes, I agree. Tahbilk have a vertical of the last 6 vintages available for $175, so a $594 pack has to be something special. Or a mistake

You've got me excited now beefarmer it was a boom for me so look forward to tasting.

Technically, this is a Nice Wines post. But given this is a mof_ legend, and personally knowing a fair few of you who don't actually go to the Nice Wines thread, I thought I would post this brief tasting note here:

The Maverick Twins Barossa GSM 2014 is an absolute mof_ bargain.

I picked up two of these in a swap with Katy. Katy and I (and others) are part of an excellent AFF wine sharing ring that formed from this amazing forum. I only tasted this tonight as Mrs Wozza opened it without asking for her Beef Stroganoff! Glad she did!!

On Vivino and Cellar Tracker, I have just posted the following tasting note:

http://www.vivino.com/wines/15789268

2014 Maverick Wines Twins Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley - CellarTracker

"mof_ - you have done it again! With a light but spicy 3.6 from me. I picked this up in a swap. And glad I did. The body is light. The nose is sweet and peppery. As this estate grown Grenache (69), Shiraz (26) and Mourvèdre (5) blend showcases the best of the Greenock Rise and Trial Hill Eden Valley, Barossa vineyards. There's boysenberries, plums, blueberries, cedar oak, sage and a touch of vanilla that lift softly into a big, warm black pepper and spice finish. At $9.90 in a dozen from VinoMofo, this is an absolute steal."

No surprise this sold out as a Black Market Deal: https://vinomofo.com/wines/red-wine/black-market-deal-gsm-2014-080116. What a perfect mid-week drinker.

I wouldn't call this a differing of opinion, just another one to add to the mix.

I picked up a case of the 2014 Twins GSM and glad I did. It's good value, and I think it has a unique taste (long peppery finish - but my missus thinks it's too peppery).

I rate it about the same - about 3.5, and I'd call it good mof_ value. I wouldn't go as far with the reserved terms of 'superb, sensational, outstanding, etc'. It's a good drink, and glad I can pull a bottle from time to time. Doubt I'd clamour immediately for a 2nd case though.

I opened my fourth or fifth bottle of the Glenlofty last night, and finished it off tonight.
It's very strange, when freshly opened this wine is so complex, it is spicy, it has an amazing flavour. But on the second night it's quite flat, very plain, that spice and complexity dissapear.

In my short history with wines I have yet to come across one that seems to die so quickly.

So I bought another case, knowing to only open a bottle when I can drink the whole thing :)

Fair comment, Vedder50. It will be too peppery for some. Based on your excellent note of caution, I had made a tweak to the Vivino, Cellar Tracker and AFF tasting note to make this a bit clearer. Hopefully, the "big, warm white pepper and spice finish" will alert the less-pepper-is-more drinkers.

My rating does include value for money. If it's a great wine but over priced, then I tend to score it a tiny bit less (Grange, being a case in point). If it over delivers in its price bracket, then I will score it up. That happened here with a 0.2 leg up for value. If the tasting note space allows, I will mention I have done this. It's only a tiny difference, but I think it's merited here for me.

If anyone is considering the Mitolo Serpico Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 offered today, you might also want to consider the (obviously omitted) Halliday 85 pt review: "A bold throw of the dice that didn't succeed."

Also 86 from Campbell on TWF (November 2015), with a comment today "
At 29.90 … it’s about $20 overpriced ".
