My fiance (now wife) and I had the Sidewood Shiraz 2013 at Maximilian’s Restaurant in SA last year, and I swear it was like drinking liquid flowers. Never before had I smelt or tasted such a perfumed red wine - it was very different but in a good way. The restaurant is a cracker - one of our favourite dining experiences ever.

Pretty sure Ned and Henry. Scored 92 on TWF but only 83 with HH. I've got some from last time it was on. The Mourvedre really takes over. Struggle to taste the shiraz. I wouldn't give it 96 but certainly better than 83. I'd prob go with TWF review.

Thanks all for your comments on this, will try to discern this in future. And if in SA , will definitely look up Maximilians. Will also try to locate some Sidewood shiraz of that vintage.

Yes, it tastes a little like the flower smells. The flavour is also reminiscent of the floral taste found in turkish delight. I believe the compound responsible for the flavour is called beta-ionone. To my taste buds it is usually a very subtle flavour found on the mid-palate. I can usually pick it out by passing the vapour of the wine over my sides of my tongue after swallowing (sorry I don't know how to describe it any better than that). I don't think it is a particularly common note in Australian wines, so you may need to keep trying more wines to find it. Maybe search out some wines that are renowned for their violet notes.

However, if you happen to be a non-taster, as opposed to a super-taster, or a regular-taster, then you may not have the right taste buds to properly discern the flavour. Apparently 25% of the population are classed as non-tasters.

I second that assumption. I can't confirm it but the evidence is strong. Not least that they explicitly identified a Shiraz Mourvedre in one of their mixed packs last week that was obviously this: the blend lacking Grenache is so unusual that it was very easy to identify. So now they're being coy about exactly what blend it is. Their notes about the winemaker check out with Dean Hewitson’s bio on the Hewitson website, and the RRP of the current vintage there is $28, even if the Halliday site has the 2012 vintage down as $26. Very tempting price but I haven't tried this vintage. 2010 was lovely.
