Vinomofo Wine Deals

Probably Denton Viewhill DM Shiraz

Best's White Gravel Hill Shiraz also matches up on JH score, 5 red stars and alcohol content. The 2015 version is $45 from Best's, that's the sort of poetic licence VM might take.

I don't recall VM selling either Denton or Best's (though I could be wrong), which makes this bit of the blurb a bit confusing:
"This 5 red star producer has had some cracking wines come through the ‘Fo recently and this ‘14 shiraz is up there with the best of them. "

Edit: there was a Denton chardonnay last week, so my last comment can be ignored! :-)

The previous Denton Chardy is my giveaway. Also the tasting notes in Halliday Wine Companion are a match with VM description.

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

I had an interesting chat with a cellar door attendant at Blue Pyrenees this weekend. Late last year I got 12 x '13 BP Richardson Cab Sav and 6 x '14 Richardson Shiraz off VM as black market deals and was quite chuffed with myself having worked them out before ordering.

I questioned the cellar door attendent about VM in general and more specifically about how these wines came to be sold through VM. I was told the following:
-They are still dealing with the fallout from this deal - no more detail here (I sensed there was some regret on their part).
-These wines were originally designated as 'on-premise/OP' wines that get sold cheap to restaurants. As such, they were not in fact 'real' Richardsons - they were a 'lesser' wine than the ones sold from say their cellar door. Without saying it explicitly it sounded like it might be the lesser barrels from the Richardson batch. They also don't have barcodes.

Now I'm not sure whether this was cough covering, brand protection or the truth. Im a huge fan of BP and this won't dissuade me from being a patron. I do however have 18 bottles of wine with questionable genetics.Â….are they the real deal? Do I let them cellar them for 15 years or return them ASAP. It also raises a few questions about the wine industry which I thought I'd throw out to the more esteemed and knowledgable members in this forum.

What is on-premise wine?
Is normal to label bin ends as a flagship wine to sell cheap to restaurants and deceive customers?
And not to mention more VM false advertisingÂ….

Note: There is a Reserve Richardson in both Cab and Shiraz and the standard Richardson Cab and Shiraz sold through cellar door and BP website. The attendant made it clear the VM product was a third tier brew, one below the standard Richardson which apparently is only sold 'OP'.

Thank you.

I am not one of those in the know or professing any above average wine skills. I would think that no winery would sell a 2nd rate off-premise wine to restaurants as this is perhaps a first line of publicity for any wine. Imagine you have paid $200 for a meal and a considerable whack for an overpriced wine. A winery would want you to feel warm and fuzzy about their product, not thinking it wasn't as good as the last bottle you bought. Surely then the wine would be from their usual bottling. I would add that wineries can pay good money to get their product onto a busy wine list. I know for a fact they pay to be on my local pub bistro wine list.

I think the winery is not all happy when customers such as yourself turn up at the cellar door saying they are able to buy the product cheaper on VM. This is their defensive stance to protect their brand.

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

On Premise wines definitely do exist: Wolf Blass White Label is one such wine from a big producer. My understanding is that they're usually not sold retail - that way customers don't feel like they're being screwed with 3x RRP pricing (because there is no retail offering).

I do find it odd, to say the least, that they'd make a lower-tier wine, give it the same name as a superior batch and then sell it through restaurants who'd charge a significant markup. That can't do much for their brand.

I have two suggestions. The better one involves spending some more coin though. Go buy the "read deal" version. Setup a double blind tasting and report back on the results.

Otherwise, crack a bottle and see if you like it. Assess it and see if its cellarable or not yourself. Try not to have preconceived ideas that its not what it should be. It really comes down to liking it or not.

Love to hear the results of you do go down on of those paths.

Thanks for the tip! Funny the Fo just put Victoria as a region and not Yarra Valley.

Any case anyone have any opinions on the wine?

I haven't tried it, but a good review from Campbell Mattinson on the Wine Companion in 2016.

I'll probably have a crack at a 6pack, altho' I need more Shiraz like a hole in the head!

Your thinking seems jumbled and I can help - there IS always a hole in your head that needs more Shiraz!

Hi Jamie,
Tess from Blue Pyrenees Estate here. Thanks for visiting our cellar door over the weekend. I apologise for my ambiguity in our discussion regarding the Richardson wines—I feel that this may have accounted for some miscommunication on my part.
Yes, we have made two slightly different versions of the Richardson wines (cork, tapered bottle, slightly different label vs. screw cap, regular bottle), which are of different vintages.
Yes, we do produce one of these with the intention of making this product more accessible to the restaurant industry. Given that the retail price of the Richardson wines is widely known, the purpose of this exercise is to offer a competitive wholesale price to enable restaurants to create a wine list that offers great value for money. However, this product is not of a lesser quality, simply different vintages to the wines that you were able to try at cellar door (which, as you will be aware, are slightly older and has amassed a greater collection of accolades).
While the ‘OP’ Richardson is labelled and packaged differently to the product that we have at cellar door, this is in no way a ‘bin end’ or anything to that effect. As mentioned by another on this forum I would certainly encourage you to open a botle and give it a try—I think you will be impressed with the wine given your feedback on the rest of the range at cellar door. In short, the products that you have purchased from Vinomofo will certainly reward cellaring for 10 plus years, and they are most definitely of the quality that you can expect from our Richardson wines. It would be a shame to return them.
As discussed on the weekend, Vinomofo provides a great opportunity to reach new customers and to give them an opportunity to try our wines where they otherwise may not.
If you’d like to chat about this further or have any questions please feel free to give me a call at the winery on (03) 5465 1111.
Enjoy!

Tess.

Looks like our little wine threads get more attention than we might think! :) Great response from Tess and, watching from the side lines, leaves me with good impressions about Pyrenees Estate (whose wines I've not yet had the pleasure of enjoying...shame on me).

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

My brother bought a case about a week ago and has nearly finished it.
He likes wines with some body, FWIW.

Thanks clearing this up Tess, especially in a forum such as this. It now makes perfect sense how vintages can be released at different times and this was my main point of curiosity.

Like I said, I'm a huge fan and will continue to make the trip up to get my case of Estate blend each year.

Vi'no has this at 4.5, couldn't find reviews to read.

Anyone tried this although suspect it is a new release.

Searches of previous vintages indicate it should be quite good, VM
says cellar to 2028.

After some AFF input on this one myself? I found these reviews

Wine Advocate 91 (Robert Parker)
"Deep garnet with hints of purple, the 2012 Shiraz has aromas of preserved plums, mulberries and baked black cherries with spice cake, chocolate box and licorice hints. Full-bodied, rich and seductive with loads of spice and velvety tannins, it has great freshness and finishes with great length."

and

Wine Spectator Magazine 86 Points
Fresh and velvety, with smoky black walnut notes that play against more charming currant fruit flavors. Finishes on an earthy note. Drink now through 2018. 529 cases made.–HS

Re: Vinomofo secret wine deals

Thank you gents, got into Halliday Wine Companion 2017, when I remembered we have had one for last fortnight -

"McLaren Vale Shiraz 2012, Beefy Shiraz with tar, plum & leather characters, bristling beneath a veneer of resiny oak.
Its an old- school style but there's no denying the power of fruit. Cork. 14.5%. Rating 92 to 2024. $38 CM"

A little different to VM's description.
