Had the Hewitson Mad Hatter 2013 a few nights ago. It's nicely balanced and drinkable, but thought it had a rather off-putting 'artificial' raspberry flavour commonly found in cheap candies.

I thought it was nice enough, although the more I drank I found the vanillin oak on the finish overpowering which I actually thought made the wine a little unbalanced. Excellent fine tannins though and was surprised that it was as drinkable as it was so young.

Will revisit my next bottle at a later date. Wouldn't have been happy paying $49 for this wine $25 wasn't an awful price though. Decent enough not to send back.

At this stage, the oak is a bit strong, but otherwise I think it's a good McLaren Vale shiraz, especially a mid-tier one at such a young age. Whilst it's OK drinking now, this really isn't meant to be a "drink now" wine in my opinion. Like The Vicar or The Stocks, this is a keep for 5-10 years (or more) McVale type wine. It will improve with age.

btw besides Krug, what else has been as or more expensive on VM?

now I'm perhaps more tempted by the 98pt Tri Nations Lineup 6pk $420 ($70/bt):

* 96-98pt Dauvergne & Ranvier Face Sud Rhone Valley Shiraz Blend 2012
* 95-98pt Mitolo Savitar Shiraz 2004
* 95-98pt Trinity Hill Homage New Zealand Shiraz 2010

after two returns, a six pack of the mad hatter 13 is coming. I will probably crack one on day 363 , about late july 17. However the integrity of the product is there but the time to peak obviously isn't. akin to a 389.

In my experience, between 2 and 5 days after the return being arranged/approved.

My experience is 1-2 weeks between organising the return with VM and Nexday actually coming to collect.

Well mini, that's a vexed question in this household. I've had cases sit around at my front door for several weeks awaiting pick-up, I ended up contacting VM and hassling them to get on with it but I think the problem lies with the freight company (in my case living in Tas it's Tasfreight). I'm currently looking at a box of Little Berries that has been hanging around for ages now and it's going to take another email or phone call to VM to move it on. Frustrating thing for me is that I tend to wait for the credit to be deposited to my account and make a new order from the daily offerings based on that little nest egg. No pick-up=no store credit=no repeat purchase!

I'm still waiting after a week. My problem is a little unique - ordered the RWT pack, it turned up sans RWT so they've promptly sent me another case now with the RWT in there. Told me I can drink a bottle of the White Label from the first case as an apology but heck when is Nexday going to pick the 5 bottles of white? More than happy to keep them FOC if they said so, I just need to be told

I share the sentiment - it was 'nice enough'. Tasted it alongside 2 other similar-priced Mc Vale shirazes - Coriole and Yangarra estates, and ranked the Hatter third.

The Mad Hatter's RRP seems to have gone up and down in the last 10 years, $49, $50, $70, $49.

10 Chains perhaps? (Like the Cabernet that someone identified as 10 Chains it was $30 down to $9 and it was listed at about the same time.)

Could be. I just recall that 10 Chains had copy that spoke about being made in North East Clare Valley - this seems to be different.
