Vinomofo Wine Deals

Well it feels to me GH that posts have dropped on all the wine-related threads/forums I visit on this site, to quote Robert Hughes it's the "shock of the new". I think people are slowly getting used to the new format but there's definitely a lack of buzz or anticipation in the air, maybe the new year will bring renewed vigour once the hangover(s) have subsided:)

I don't think the new format is that bad, certainly not bad enough to stop people visiting/posting if they are really looking to buy.

My own forum had a bit of a lull in September/October, as people considered their budgets and the impending festive season, and a seasonal lull in the sharpest of deals. But it came back with a vengeance in November with all the $100 vouchers and other deals floating around. I expect it will be a little quiet again until about the end of January as holidays and hot weather aren't conducive to wine-buying.

With VM I've sent back two recent buys, Geisen Clayvin Pinot Noir 2013 $90-->$45, just not good enough for $45 and the Australian RRP (via Robert Oatley) is $64.95 and the Star Lane Nebbiolo 2015 @ $25, I'd rather buy a Langhe Nebbiolo under cork than drink the Star Lane.

I think the Allegiance Artisan Barossa Shiraz 2016 @ $18 is a pretty good wine, far ahead of the thin and lack lustre McLaren Vale 2015 Artisan Shiraz. Also bought some of the St Leonards Durif 2015, happy to keep that one.

Hi RB

I'm guessing you have doubtless sampled the Bleasdale Generations shiraz, do you rate it? Thanks!

Sorry, I haven't tried the 2014. There wasn't much interest from my subscribers on the VM offer @ $19.90, given previous vintages have been cheaper elsewhere. Bleasdale has dropped off my buying radar a bit in recent years.

Thanks for your opinion RB, Its appreciated!

I'm really puzzled by "lacklustre" label applied to VM these days. It's not the glory days of TWE offloading loads of their premium labels, but there's still plenty of good stuff around: Tahbilk 1927 Vines Marsanne, the Giovanni Rosso Barolos, Fourny & Fils champagne, the Shirvington Shiraz/Cab offerings. They had some back vintage stuff too (Torbreck Struie 2003, and Kay Bros Block 6 2005, Brokenwood Sems from 2009).

What exactly are you guys looking for?

I bought 20 cases this year from the VM, and the previous 2 years were between 25-30. I havent been as excited lately as previous years, but still have added some decent wine to the cellar in the last 12 months. Still a pretty solid year of offerings.

I don't think the format is necessarily bad either, I'm a relatively fresh face here compared to some of the long-term stalwarts, I guess it's just human nature that you want to stick with the familiar. The old-format forum participation was falling off a bit pre the rejigging but overall I think it's discernibly changed although there may well be a lot more lurkers around than previously too....

The Cab Sav could be Mitchell's Sevenhill. Worth a punt if it is, probably worth a punt if it isn't at that price....

That would be a great buy! Seems HH only gave it 3.5 stars on his website though? That doesnt translate to 95pts

Edit. It appears upon further investigation that he did indeed give it a 95 somewhere down the line. Strange. I guess it would be the Mitchell.....I'm in!

I hope the 2009 Clare cabernet is the Mitchell, it's been one of my favourites over decades :) The description matches up with Halliday's comments, and both he and Jeremy Oliver gave it 91 - if it's aged well it will be great value at $11!

Confirming this week's arrivals:

Black Market Barossa shiraz 2017 $25 -> $9 = Maverick
Vinomofo - Black Market Shiraz 2017 - Red Wine

Black Market Margaret River cab merlot 2014 $24 -> $8.90 = Swings & Roundabouts
Vinomofo - Black Market Cabernet Merlot 2014 - Red Wine
Tried one of these last night, AMAZING value - lovely example of a Margaret River cab merlot. Tasted it after the Blue Rock Pantelis 2012 ($50 -> $22.90) and it's not in that class but not a long way short of it either.

I popped along to the Vinomofo Warehouse sale today in Port Melbourne - in fact its still on until 9pm. I'd really recommend it to anyone in Melbourne when they do the next one. There was a limited selection of their high end offerings on sale - plus a few select mixed packs, but the main factor for me was the ability to pick your own 6 pack for $90.

Naturally, not all wines were on offer - but the novelty factor was worth it. It gave me the opportunity to purchase wines from producers that i'd not had before - (but not at the risk of a six pack), such as Paxton, Hazelgrove & Alpha Crucis, I added a Redman Cab Sav, Handpicked Shiraz & Bleasdale Frank Potts to complete the six. It might not be the biggest bargain, but i'd do it agin for sure!

Notice they now do click and collect for those in Melbourne.

This arrived today, confirmed as Mitchell Sevenhill - looking forward to trying it.

Vinomofo - Black Market Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 - Red Wine

Let us know the results of your tasting roshea

I cant find the 95 for the 2009, but the 2010 received 96 by both HH and JH, did HH review the 2009 twice?
