I just didn't like it. It was very tightly wound on day 1 after some airing with the tannins overpowering the fruit making it hard to drink even with a steak. Day 2 it got a bit better but still not as outstanding as the Robert Parker review would describe it.

Maybe it had some heat damage or maybe it is just the style but I couldn't see myself enjoying it.

1847 first pick was actually a very descent wine (2018)

Carries similar RRP to the Astralis. Different styles but Piggott has got nothing on the Astralis. I've bought Piggott in the past where I've drunk one and happily flipped the rest on Langtons. Its just a big rough on the edges wine that does not justify anything near what they think its worth.

I'd love to hear the inside line on what's been happening with Clarendon over the past five years. It was always well beyond my reach but these days is hard to distinguish from one of those high RRP/regular 'massive discounters' - which doesn't sit so comfortably with my understanding of where they at least once sat in the quality spectrum (ie, right up there). And the age of what they're selling off is often impressive. I assume it's money stress from china drying up

I remembered some articles mentioned that Clarendon Hills used to be focused on the overseas market. I believed they overstocked a lot of wines in the past few years. Just not sure why there are so many back vintage wines on sale via the Langtons or the VM.

Quality wise I think they are pretty good value after the discount. I still enjoy the Brookman Syrah 2004 which I bought from Langtons many years ago.
