Virgin Amex Velocity Platinum card now 110k points

I applied for the card, but I already have 3 AmEx-issued cards.

They called me and asked: 1) I close 2 out of my current 3 AmEx account, because they now allow maximum of 2 cards, and 2) to inform me I will be ineligible for the bonus, because I am already an AmEx customer.

I am happy to close 2 of the cards, but I wonder if everyone here knows whether they will give out the bonus even if people are current customers? I don’t want to pay the annual fee if there is no bonus.

Thanks.

I've been reading on here that people have been getting the bonus points even when they already have other Amex cards.

Yes, a few people have said that, I got them and now have 2 AMEX cards. Has anyone else heard of an applicant getting a phone call telling them that they wouldn't get the points?

The only thing is that they specifically told me on the phone that I was/am not eligible. I am now afraid they might have made a note on the application or something. I wonder if there has been any case of someone being told they are ineligible only to receive the bonus later on.

Not a huge risk really when you consider you get the flight to offset some of the $349 as well as the numerous statement credits throughout the year. :)

Did you sign up via a referral ? Read somewhere here by someone in the know that a referral link application overides something in their system awarding you full points regardless of prior cards held. Might be just a coincidence and that Amex really don't care and know that they'll most likely make money off you regardless :)

If anyone would be so kind to donate to the 'first time in J' fund, please use my referral link below as it would mean a great deal!

Hey Winston1!

I haven't tried to book my flights yet - was just jumping on the referral conga bandwagon :) I just couldn't believe Amex ran out of plastic for the cards - that excuse just really appealed to my sense of the absurd!

Annoying that it took so long as I couldn't get a referral link without the card - hence still hoping someone can 'conga' mine :)

any place where food is listed as main the merchant code is technically a 'restaurant' and worth 3 X points. Further that, some restaurants have Amex perks, such as free bottle of wine.

Good luck finding a link. 3 x points depends on the merchant code allocated by Amex to the merchant (see conditions below). I doubt a comprehensive list exists except within Amex. Would be useful to start a thread on AFF with experiences of 3 x at restaurants, given the number of Amex cards now held by AFF members.

"Spending at restaurants, airlines and accommodation, major cruise and tour operators categories will only be eligible for increased Velocity Points if the merchant is categorised as eligible according to its merchant code. Each merchant is typically assigned a code and categorised based on what they primarily sell. For example, spend on dining within a retail department store, hotel, pub and liquor outlet may not be eligible for the additional Points for restaurants. Velocity Points are awarded on the Australian-dollar billed amount of the spend in foreign currency. Except for spend at merchants where you earn 3, 2 or 0.5 Points per $1 spent, you earn 1 Point for every $1 spent including if the purchase is made with someone other than the provider of the goods or service, for example through a third party such as a travel aggregator. The earn rate of 3 Points per $1 spent on Virgin Australia only applies to purchases made in Australia. "

Here is my link in any event, haha. https://www316.americanexpress.com/i...QSFw0XBw%3D%3D

kaktusdigital is right in that any food merchant will get you the 3x points. It just depends whether Amex recognises the establishment as a food merchant. So 3x points are available from Mc Donalds to your swankiest of restaurants. The only times I haven't got the 3x points if the restaurant was part of a larger establishment such as a hotel.

A family member applied yesterday. I suggested that as they moved flats just a week ago after 7 years in there last place, that they put their old address on it as the owner is very amenable, and it's just around the corner.

So, for those that applied and were successful recently, am I right in thinking it cannot be until after she activates the card that she can change the address, so it will definitely go to the old address?

Get said family member to get mail redirection for a few months. Probably a good idea for other mail anyhow.

As already quoted there's no "definitive list" of 3X restaurants but as long as they are classified under "food" as merchant code you'll be fine... personally I never had any issues receiving the 3X points when dining out but I guess you could get caught when the main business is classified as something else (e.g. a book store with a cafe inside).

BTW if you want to make the most out of your Virgin Amex Velocity Platinum card the folks at Point Hacks put together a great guide: American Express Velocity Platinum & Velocity Escape Cards

I have a few more questions about the Amex Velocity Platinum card:
1) Do the unused lounge passes roll over into the new year if you don't use them?
2) When can you start booking the free flight? Are there space restrictions or can you book the flight if it's simply available? I'm assuming you have to call Amex in order to book the flights, right?

1. They don't roll over, you have to use them by anniversary date
2. Fare needs to be available as a "Saver class fare", as per T&c I just read. It does talk about limited dates around school hols/xmas etc, but if saver is available you will be all good.. Yep Amex Membership Travel Services (ph) 1300 366 105 :)
If you haven't hooked a card as yet, my referral link is a couple of pages back :) No joy so far, just looking for the one.

Thanks. Annoying that the lounge passes don't roll over. So, for the flights, I just check if saver fare is available then ring them to book?
