Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

Upgrading to iOS7 was the only difference between my two trips where it worked then cut out intermittently.
If you try a few times it sometimes works. Apple changed the way iOS7 connects to wifi networks.

Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

Of course, for iAgnostics there's Android or Silverlight;)

There are known issues with the wifi app and iOS7 according to some posts on the VA FB page.

Re: Android App!

Thanks for the quick reply - Android 2.3.7 is apparently too old school to be compatible with VA inflight wifi. Given that a new Android operating systems comes out every other week is there a way of future proofing or settling on industry standards that don't require buying a new phone every 3 months? Or would that ruin someones business model?

Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

Hi, I have tried the Iphone onboard and it works great. They say you can also access on a laptop installed with Silverlight. Tried this but couldn't get it to work although the test video on Virgin site was OK. Can anyone help?

TBH 2.3.7 is old in "computer time", around 2.5 years. However some devices can be upgraded to later versions even if not officially supported. What is the device you are using?

It requires 3.2 or later, but that's not too onerous given "Ice Cream Sandwich" has been around since mid 2011.

FWIW, I too am still on Gingerbread 2.3.6 (but considering upgrading).

Re: Android App!

not sure if it is mentioned earlier, but it will crash out if it detects your iDevice is jailbroken. Installing xConn (free) gets you past the jailbreak check/crash.

Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

Had problems when ios7 first came in with IFE cutting out, tried again today and worked fine on 2 hour flight, no drop outs at all.

Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

4.3 on Android works better than expected on Galaxy Nexus
Happy with that a QC15
Will try the new QC20's to compare and may try the Asus Infinity on 4.2.2

Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

Kids programs worked well for minidoc yesterday.

However the need to shut down pre landing is definitely inferior to QF's gate to gate seatback IFE.

So I'd be saying to virgin to try to get regulatory approval for devices gate to gate.

Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

Streaming IFE is OK, not great, not bad but there are a few things that would definitely improve it:

1. Gate to gate operations. Obviously this needs CASA approval and i hope VA are working on that.
2. Better content: Specifically newer and with more turnover from month to month.
3. The addition of some streaming/ live component -- some inflight streaming audio channels at least would be nice and probably not massively expensive from a technological point of view.
4. Full wifi access -- eventually.

Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

After my MEL-SYD flight yesterday it appears the content has finally been refreshed. This is the first update I can recall since the streaming IFE was introduced.

CASA do not have any rules on PED use but the airlines have policy's to ensure safety under which such device use is covered, basically VA have to demonstrate its safe and the policy should be changed.

CASA has no immediate plans to develop specific rules relating to electronic devices.

If the airlines wish to change the current restrictions they would have to show there was no risk to safety. CASA would consider any proposal for changes to the current restrictions put forward by the airlines.

Re: Virgin Australia streaming IFE

Has anyone noticed any variances to reception in relation to physical location in cabin?

Im loving virgin!

Is there a list of planes fitted with WIFI? Or a thread like there was for the interior? Or even just a % of fleet completed?

Are the NZ birds with PE seats instead of business getting it?

Flying across the ditch in Feb and wondering whether the plane will have it.
