Re: Virgin WIFi IFE

Flying to per today, had an email to remind me to download the app with the links etc... will be interested to see how we go!
Only, catch, it seems I'm on a 737!

the IFE is useless to me, just keeps telling me I don't have a compatible device so can't download the app. Just another VA idea that doesn't work in practice. I am not going out to buy a new PED just to watch their IFE.

I was on mel to bne last night crew told us to download the app before takeoff which I duly did. Worked a treat on Android for the music anyway. Didnt watch a movie as the sunset was awesome and I was in J on my free gold upgrade so wanted to enjoy my first ever J experience.

Re: Virgin WIFi IFE

Virgin Australia’s free Wireless In-flight Entertainment system will be available on your upcoming flight VA xx_x on 10 August 2013*. .
My GS2 on Android 2.3.6 "is not compatible", but the email does mention "Windows Laptops" so my NetBook will get some TLC today.

Re: Virgin WIFi IFE

Samsung Galaxy S2? You should be on Android 4.0.x by now/

Indeed. I think my S2 (currently on loan) was 4.0.2 or something like that. If kies don't offer an upgrade, www.sammobile.com (as one example) will allow you to download the latest legitimate ROMs. Installing is a breeze due to people developing upgrade systems outside of the Samsung kies ecosystem.

It offers to upgrade to ICS - but to now it hasn't been 'broke'.

FWIW, I only upgraded to XP generally when I could no longer get drivers for 98 ...

Here's the (lufthansa) link for Win devices. It uses Silverlight.:-|

Hey - I work in IT ... recently I have been doing some perl development amongst other things.

I am fully aware of the benefits of using "mature" O/S. Let someone else be Mr/Ms Beta ... :p

Also on topic, glad to see that the reaction has been positive from those that have tried it so far, the real test however will be when lovestotravel does ;)

:p

I have zero interest in flying Virgin domestically, and that won't be changing anytime soon. Given their continuing flop in passengers numbers and finances, the pressure is really on VA to pull their finger out and work out if they are really a LCC or want to be a full service carrier. They can only continue to bleed money for so long before something changes, the acquisition of Tiger and Skywest isn't going to help them anytime soon!

Oh and I also have zero interest in using my own device to watch streamed content provided by the airline. If I want to watch my own device I'll have my own content, if I want to watch the airlines content I want it to be a fixed IFE solution.

NB: The only real change that would get me back to flying VA, is if JQ takes a larger presence in the QF Group, I am concerned about what JQ is going to do with all those 787's they have on order )options). If the 787's all go to JQ then it's bye bye QF International, but that's around 2016 so a few years left for VA to actually become a real domestic competitor.

I love the idea of bring your own device. I often don't have the time/focus to DL my own content. Being in the is air one of the few times I get to be on my own and relax. To have a selection of movies available and all I have to so is pick one really appeals to me.

I'd prefer my own device - but on longer flights if I'm doing that i'd really like a USB port that can do more than just the 500mA, and something to hang my tablet up rather than looking at my lap.

What device do you have?
Wireless In-flight Entertainment is offered on selected Virgin Australia flights operated by equipped Boeing 737 and Embraer 190 aircraft. The aircraft operating your flight may change without notice. In the event of an aircraft change, we are unable to guarantee that your aircraft will be equipped with Wireless In-flight Entertainment. We apologise for any inconvenience.

The Virgin Australia Entertainment Apps for Android devices work with selected phones and tablets using the Android operating system versions 3.2 Honeycomb, 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and 4.2 Jelly Bean. Windows phones and tablets and MacBooks are currently not supported on the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system. Virgin Australia is working to increase the availability of the system on additional devices.

Re: Virgin WIFi IFE

I flew on the trial aircraft a couple of months back.
Got out my laptop, connected to the wireless, opened up my browser and there was the content.
Not as much content as I carry with me but ....

Re: Virgin WIFi IFE

The US is a different ballgame altogether than Australia in terms of in flight internet. For a country as large geographically as ours you would need a huge investment in base stations (how most US in flight data is delivered), something that simply wouldn't be justified by the return on investment it would generate. That said, it would probably work for the triangle flights provided the price isnt obscene.

I believe one of the large telcos has said that it would be feasible off their existing towers. However, SYD-MEL, SYD-BNE are essentially bus routes. I mean there are 45 daily flights for QF on MEL-SYD, one of the top passenger routes in the world.

How much does the route differ, if at all, for each of these? Do they follow a set of waypoints?

Re: Virgin WIFi IFE

FINALLY ended up on a flight with it today. Was pretty impressed... Looking forward to ongoing roll out.

(OT) I relate to that. I still have one computer with Win98 on it just so I can use a dot matrix printer that OS later than 98 doesn't appear to support (stuffs up the printing). The dot matrix is a cable label printer that cost me $5k many years ago and as it still works, and I still have stock of the labels, I have no intention of upgrading!

Oh, and I also have a Win05 tucked away in case I ever need to use an old Brother A3 printer that has a scan cartridge for it. I don't often need to scan A3, but when I do, the cartridge only works with 05 version (start me up )

On what device?

The thing I most dislike is the BYO necessity. I rarely travel with a computer and I don't own an iPad (and I have no intention of buying one)....so I'm left with my iPhone which I don't see the need to squint to watch a piddly screen. I guess the music is a real option for me that I just might enjoy (content dependant)!

Was on an Ipad. YMMV on other devices!

Re: Virgin WIFi IFE

I didn't get a chance to have a great look but found the moving map handy and that there did seem to be quite a bit of content, at least with the TV Series
