VA855 MEL-SYD 3:30pm departure yesterday had the same options as the above post, but I wasn't able to compare as turbulence kept the FAs seated for an 15-20 min shortly after we hit cruising altitude, and they didn't have time to finish serving row 2.
OT, but I felt incredibly sorry for the crew - 1D was one of the most difficult passengers I've witnessed in my flying experience.
It started before take off with an argument about putting his manbag in the overhead lockers. Then he refused to return his PDB glass before take off because he 'hadn't finished his drink'. After take off he asked for both meal options (lol) - when told no he scoffed and picked one, then went to the galley two min later to change his choice and was told it was too late, so he made a big scene. His meal was then served as the captain/FO instructed crew to prepare for landing... the FAs gave him as much time to eat as they could, but I think everyone in J was expecting fireworks when they had to collect his tray before he'd finished eating, and that we got.
He held on to the tray with both hands to stop the FA from picking it up, and started yelling at her. A second FA (possibly the CSM) had to come up to defuse the situation. As a compromise they offered he keep just the main plate of food in his lap during landing, he then gave in and let them take the whole tray. When they asked for the cloth napkin on his lap, he threw it at the FA ....
Watching all this made me wonder how far FAs let it go before calling security/police to meet them at the gate on arrival? Would they have just escalated internally to VA management to ban the person from flying with them instead?
