Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

Had a flight on SYD-CBR 2 days ago in J class. Departure time was 1805. Had a selection of either couscous or pasta for dinner.

(ps. i don't know how my image turned upside down. it looks fine whilst it was still on my mac)

Arrrgggghhhhhh! Upside down plane! We're all going to DIE!

I personally think that it is time to get a new head chef consultant, the Luke Mangan name means nothing in the world of good food to me, I think he got lucky. There is plenty of other chef's with their associated restaurants that actually win awards for their great food and in turn have a strong clientele. Like it or not Neil Perry is a winner and his food is great and what you cook out of his cookbooks tastes great, so Virgin needs someone like him. (I do fly Virgin not Qantas so nothing about Neil Perry is in regards to that). I am sure a new chef star could come up with some great ideas and menu for Virgin. Virgin has changed most things under JB however I think they have missed the boat on this one. I mean being served a Bakers Delight scroll as a business class snack is very poor form, I can't believe a chef would allow that or make that decision.

Mmmm appetising. It probably ended up in the bin by the look of it. Do you think that Luke Mangan would really be proud to have his name on this rubbish. I think that I will send him an email and ask him. Sydney Restaurant | glass brasserie | Menus by Luke Mangan Sydney Restaurants | glass brasserie | Restaurant Contact Details

HAHAHA! i wonder how i did survive that ride!

I'll have to learn how to take pictures on my iPad and transfer them skillfully to my mac

ironically i was there at glass a day before the flight, but did not meet the man himself.

In the sequel to my last post, I bring to you: Same flight times, same flight destinations, 1 month apart! Only difference this was a mid-week flight as opposed to a Sunday night, but I don't believe this directly impacts anything. Also, the J cabin was almost at capacity both times.

TSV-BNE
Depart: 17:00
Arrive: 18:45

Snack service. Besides the fountain of Fat Yak I was supplied with a pair of vegetarian rice paper rolls, dipping sauce and mini carrot cake. The dipping sauce was delicious, which is fortunate because the rolls tasted like nothing. This probably wasn't helped by the tofu log squatting in the middle of each (wonderful mental image for your Friday afternoon!).

No picture of that one un/fortunately, thought I took it but camera/operator failure I guess.

BNE-DRW
Depart: 20:45
Arrive: 00:30

Dinner service. First up, more nuts! But cold this time. No idea why really. Some reason only 1 course (besides the nuts) compared to the 2.5 last time, which was odd. Given a choice between the shepherds pie or an "Arabian Tagine" (forgive the spelling). Recalling the mountain of green paste someone posted earlier I decided option B. Came with same side salad, bread and dukkah as last time. No desert. Tasted OK, but certainly nothing I would rave about.

Now, as this was the second round of J seats I've been in I don't know whether the shine was off compared to the first time around, but both flights, and especially the BNE-DRW one, seemed inferior to the first round, in food quality, quantity, and the service seemed a bit lower too. Now I can accept the latter is probably due to the fact there was 4-5 more people than last time, but why the reduction in every other capacity is beyond me.

Yes, forgot that on longer flights there is a pre-meal drinks run, with warm nuts.

B737 warm nuts.

And Coast to Coast with a coughtail.

A330 warm nuts.

On longer flights I have had an entree prior to the main meal.

B737 Entree service - soup. (Once eaten the entree was taken away and replaced with the main course.)

A330 Entree service - egg salad.

Sorry for the annoying n00b question.
I am booked to travel on the 1.45pm OOL-MEL service in J today. Like , right now. I booked this specifically so I could sample the lunch service.
It has been delayed to 2.30pm. Do I still get lunch or a 'snack'? There's no Lounge here, so eating beforehand requires paying.
I realise the flight is now leaving after the designated lunch window, but that's not my fault.
Please. Anyone have any info within the next hour or so?
I guess I will find our regardless.

Knowing Virgin probably a snack, then again the catering may not get loaded

Let us know what you get

Thanks and I will.
It's turned out to be a very disappointing day in my SC run and my first real extensive experience at domestic business class.

It should be based on your original depature time. I was on a flight a couple of weeks ago we were a 630pm depature and left at 8.30pm and still got dinner. That's was MEL OOL

Thanks for the info. I bloody hope so. I am starving and don't really want to fork out for lunch if I get lunch onboard.

You can always ask for anything from the Economy menu, so even IF it's a snack service you can get the New Yorker sandwhich

Just spoke to a contact in DJ who advises catering is based on the Depature time and the meals are as well all know prepared earlier. There advice to me was that it should be lunch, in accordence with the shedule. I understand this is not a lot of consolation given the amount of mishaps we have all read here.

Ended up getting a full lunch. Shepherds pie with mushy peas. J was full with op ups, due to cancellations. Amazing how a couple of hours of fog at SYD can create so many problems.
Am just about to write up a trip report with lots of pics.

I quite like the shepherds pie, though I always find somewhere to push aside the mushy peas. The pie sure beats the "oh sorry we didn't load any J food". I quite like the New Yorker sandwich from the Y menu, but, like the wraps and the cheese, I am over them now.

Oh, and as for SYD. I'd have to think hard and trawl the memory to remember a single DJ flight of mine to have left on time from SYD. Its rain, or lightning, or curfew or wind, or fog, or something....
