Virgin Australia Crew Incident in Fiji

A man is reported to be in police custody over the alleged sexual assault of a female Virgin Australia crew member while celebrating New Year’s Eve in Nadi.

It’s understood that her male colleague went to find her. While outside, a group of opportunistic youths attacked him, knocked him unconscious and robbed him.

2 bits of bad luck with the crew and certain places you just shouldn’t visit.

then any penalty for the original offence, if proven
Why are you assuming there is an ‘offence’.

@MarkD said ‘incident’. That is a fault-neutral term until the process determines an outcome - which may for example, depending on your industry, be equipment failure

What I am annoyed at is that it was only Channel 7 reporting "the incident" originally. Surely al the other Australian outlets knew about it. but even the next day when I used 3 different search engines it was only the 7 coverage.
I am wondering if the media were asked particularly by VA management not to broadcast it until they had arrangements in place for family and support personnel to get to Fiji.
But I lost respect for Australian Media way back in 1969.

Doubt it
That’s just 7 being 7. They really sensationalise some stories and you will see this on ‘exclusive’ or ‘first on 7’ tags slapped across footage. Perhaps the others wanted to fact check more, I mean, the 7 story was really jist speculation, and they got the bit wrong about making out the crew being somewhat forced separated in the hot.

Is a rush today to be first to market with many media stories, purely for clicks, ie revenue.

It's the Advertiser in Adelaide and they are using the word rape but it is Murdoch press so who knows

Unless you work for the local constabulary or the security services, good luck seizing my phone unless you supplied it.
Some of us actually are required to adhere to SOP in critical incidents. This is our policy and failure to adhere to policy involves disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal. Our phones are siezed so we do not communicate, if it comes to that where i work, cough has really hone down and you dont want to talk about it anyway.

A very sad situation for the crew, the 2 members and their families but particularly the 21 year old female.

Just my opinion but perhaps Virgin may rethink crew accommodation location, anything to help their staff feel safer.
(another airline accommodate their crew on Denarau)

It didn't occur at the hotel but in the party district for want of a better term. We stayed at the Tanoa decades ago. It's a convenient hotel for a pre stay before going to an island for which transport doesn't leave until the next morning.

Often any hotel or resort is relatively safe, but what lies in the surrounding streets can be a different story. You don’t need to venture far from any accommodation to find trouble these days.

Much like many of our own suburbs here. I wouldn’t go walking the streets in Melbourne or Sydney at the odd hours. I nearly got carjacked in Collingwood a few months ago when returning to my car late at night. Too many junkies about these days.

Yes, agree hotel is conveniently located,
I had my Risk management/mitigation hat on.

The party/nightclub area, bit like with our King Street and Chapel Street @Pushka we should all be able to do these things and be/feel safe.
Sadly, times change.
There are parts of my local Shire I wouldn't do after daylight hours now.

Certainly interesting to see the romantic obsession the public (and therefore the media) have with airlines/aircraft. We still don’t have full details, but I’d hazard a guess that if any general member of the traveling public was robbed/assaulted in a foreign country, it wouldn’t rate a column in the local paper. Stick a flight attendant uniform on them and it’s “breaking news” 🤷🏾‍♀️

A little harsh, in general, and more particularly, insensitive to the individual concerned, who’s life has been changed forever (if the reports are accurate)

As a general observation i would say that it does tend to make the news reports when Australians abroad are robbed or (sexually) assaulted.

I think that is a massive over generalisation

Just for perspective. As a regular to Fiji (ie we have a feel for the place) we stayed one night at the Mercure (same area) at the end of June. I went for a walk at around 5pm (day light) and felt quite uncomfortable in that area to the point I cut my walk short and returned to the hotel.
