Virgin Australia Discover Gold (Status Match)

Yes, you should earn points/status credits for an Any Seat award as it's essentially a cash fare being purchased using points at a fixed rate.

However, I would advise against using this unless you're teeming with Velocity points you can't otherwise use. If the Any Seat award is good value, it's because the airfare itself is cheap anyway.

Thanks @Mattg - I guess I will hold off buying this JASA fare. I've got until 11 Jun to make up another 30 SC, which I'm sure I will using paid $ fares. No use spending points on this ATM.

Hey everyone, I'm doing SYD-MEL-SYD this weekend. I'm on the Discover Gold thingy. Need to get 80 SC before 11 Jun 2021.
I thought you now only need to book one flight to get the extension?

Simply book 1 eligible flight* by 28 March 2021.

Your Status locked in until 31 March 2022. Exclusions apply. See Terms and Conditions.

Had another look on the website, it doesn't specifically say that those who got the Discover Gold status match are ineligible for the extension.
It says:
"Status Rewards for our existing Gold and Platinum Status members start when you book one eligible flight with us before the 28th of March 2021"
You could be "existing" due to the Discover Gold match.

Lower down it has:
1. Status extension

Gold and Platinum Velocity Members will be eligible for the Status extension when you book an Eligible Flight between 12:01AM AEST 7 December 2020 and 11:59PM AEST 28 March 2021 (Booking Period) for travel up until 22 February 2022 (Travel Period), and you meet the below conditions.

At the end of the Booking Period, we’ll assess your eligibility, and if you’re eligible, you’ll receive a new Review Date of 31 March 2022.

Your membership Review Date (being the last day of your Benefit Period) must fall between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021.  If your Review Date occurs prior to 28 March 2021, you might experience a downgrade. In this instance, we’ll assess your eligibility between 28 March 2021 and 31 March 2021 and reinstate you to the previous Status level you held at 7 December 2020. Your new Review Date will be 31 March 2022. If your Review Date occurs after 28 March 2021, we’ll assess your eligibility between 28 March 2021 and 31 March 2021 and extend your Review Date until 31 March 2022.

You won’t be eligible for the Status extension if you:

  • are a Pilot Gold or VIP Velocity member;
  • have a Review Date in 2022
  • have a Review Date in 2021, were eligible for the first Status extension announced in March 2020 and have not yet had your extra year of Status applied to your Velocity membership
  • upgraded your Status between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021
  • were awarded an individual discretionary Status extension by Velocity

Eligible members for the Status extension are still able to maintain or upgrade their Status to the next Status level in accordance with the Velocity membership Terms and Conditions. Find out more about how to maintain or upgrade your Status level. This offer is not transferable. Any Status Credits and Eligible Sectors earned in a member’s account are subject to expiry after 12 months from earn.

They could interpret the "upgraded your Status between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021" part as "upgraded due to Discover Gold" 😂
Then again, you didn't upgrade your status if you got the Discover Gold match, VA did.

I'm sure they didn't consider people who could look at stacking the offer haha

This is the email I received from Velocity on my Discover Gold..... so to the end of May, one Flight and 80 SC out of which I have most already with Flybuys.

Has anyone achieved the Discovery Gold target and gifted a Gold membership yet? I reached the target a couple of days ago - my review date is still 29th May 2021, and I can't see a means to gift the companion gold. Do I have to wait till my review date, or do I need to call? Advice appreciated.

I think we have to wait until the end of May to do this.

I thought the review date was extended until June 2021 for everyone, isn't it ?

Mine was 11 April 2021, later changed to 11 June 2021

Mine changed from 28 March to 28 May (they were all extended by 2 months). In any case, you have to wait until your review date to gift.

Well it's now after 28 May... has anyone who completed the challenge received any notification from Velocity or been able to gift Gold status to somebody?

My account is under review , so would expect something once that is completed.

My review date is today. Just says "Great work, you will maintain gold status!" I assume I will get a welcome pack eventually and a new card.

How many of you are likely to move your main flying to Virgin from Qantas now you have Gold/Platinum on both?

Still under review according to my web page but I have easily met the requirements. Will definitely be switching, one main reason being that Qantas now run almost all flights ex HBA on uncomfortable 717s many of the economy class only.

Mine still says under review too, I have exceeded the requirements and my review date was 27th May. How long does it normally take to be reviewed?

No idea, but I guess the cute answer is "too long"! ;)

My review date was May 28 ... not too worried about it though, I'm guessing that some poor soul has the job of individually assessing each of these, so there's likely a bit of a backlog.

I am surprised it's not automated, that would be a bit a tedious task to manually go through each membership and review.
