Virgin Australia Financially Secure? [Now in Voluntary Administration]

Related: DL will be pulling out of SYD-LAX until mid April (resumption date subject to change).

With this recent breaking news: This could now go either way for VA, either VA operates a drastically reduced SYD-LAX schedule (with BNE/MEL-LAX axed and funneled through SYD), or VA follows DL out the door.

Looking at the VA booking engine virtually almost all international (all Trans-Tasman is gone) has been wiped off the Booking Engine (notable exclusion is the 3x weekly BNE-HND) until 14th April.

Looks like VA's remaining LAX flights will operate only to try to get people home before the LAX flights temporarily cease, it's likely they'll temporarily park and/or send the 77Ws into check maintenance early.

  • Equivalent to 53 aircraft on ground
  • BNE-HND launch postponed
  • MEL-DPS launch postponed
  • MEL-LAX suspended from 20 March

There isn’t much else they could do once the 2 week quarantine policy was introduced. There’s no point flying empty planes. It’s still a major decision though. I wonder if they’ll get to keep their HND slot.

Well, the Japanese government can take it back if they want but they'll have to find someone else to give it to and use immediately, otherwise take it back from them and give it to the next airline wanting extra slots at HND right now.

That might prove difficult :)

I think there will be more slots available in the future than there has been in the recent past at all airports.

Can VA organize tours of the grounded aircraft (in groups of 10 or less of course).

I'd pay money to sit in the coughpit of a 737/777/A330 that isn't going anywhere for a while..

It could even be an AFF benefit of some kind..

Alternately we could use all those grounded QAN plans to teach them about the priority boarding that gets so many complaints on the QAN threads.. that VA apparently do well :-)

Well as most of us here in this 5-star thread predicted, Japan will not launch.

And VAi is closed for business.

My next prediction is that some routes will never reopen (International) and this has handed PS a golden opportunity to do a swift brutal restructure to prune off the decaying parts of their business for when the recovery comes back.

Also presents an opportunity for VA to re-negotiate the 'subsidised' Pacific Island/NZ routes which are carrying poor loads (but with varying cargo loads). Surely the likes of (seasonal) NTL-AKL and DUD would be up there for "review".

Surely they can move those cargo contracts to third parties (if they don't lose those to competitors), which would free up those 737s for more domestic use when the worldwide international market recovers.

Oh gosh. I’d love that! Sign me up (VA if you’re listening...)

I would pay money for hubby to deploy the slide and go down it - only way I ever want to experience it is in a controlled environment

SQ is arguably worse-off
International travel will go to almost zero..
They don't have a domestic industry

Agreed. Why does everyone seem to assume they will still be sitting pretty after all this is over? Can't think of too many airlines that are likely to be affected worse!

The funny part is that there are still a few "analysts" and/or "armchair commentators" across the internet in the comments section across articles still claiming they're VA's "so-called saviour" and that SQ will "bail them out".

As we all know, SQ are no-where near that position financially, nor where they interested prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Absolutely correct. No return on investment there, just wait until restructure comes post Cono and strike then
