Virgin Flyer 2-For-1 - Significant negative changes from Dec 1

Re: Virgin Flyer 2-For-1

What changes last time are you referring to?

The change that meant you couldn't book the cheapest fare bucket tickets with the offer, so it usually ended up more expensive booking 2 for 1 than it did booking directly.

Wasn't a VM change though. It was more VA not understanding how to use their own system properly - they seem to have fixed that now.

That wasn't an actual change, and one I fortunately didn't experience. This however, is a significant change that is officially in writing and would make users and potential customers think twice about getting/keeping the card. When everyone starts closing accounts, the impact of the loss of customers would be quite sigificant I should think.

Re: Virgin Flyer 2-For-1

Dumb question: Does anyone know if it's possible to get the Virgin Amex sign-on bonus (up to 50,000 points) if you still hold or have recently dumped a Flyer/High Flyer card? Is there a limit to the number of new credit cards one can apply for in a given year?

The Virgin Flyer cards are issued by Virgin Money / Citigroup and the Virgin Amex is issued by American Express. Amex won't care whether you do, or don't, or did hold a Flyer card, outside of whatever criteria they use for approving any other applicant. I applied for both cards simultaneously a couple of years back, was approved on both, and picked up the sign-on bonus on both.

Ta, Fruitcake. I'm sure I've seen other people imply that was the case, but just wanted to ask to be sure to be sure. :)

No worries. It was a very nice kickstart to my shift from QF-earning cards to VA-earning cards, especially given that one of the cards also provided status credits as a sign-on bonus.

What's stopping you from booking a second seat under "Joe Bloggs"? And then at the last minute, mr Bloggs misses his flight. There's a good chance the seat would be vacant.

Besides being fraudulent? Oh and not earning Status credits/points.

If you used this card for 2-4-1 business fares or flexis (with points upgrade) it easily covers the annual fee. So if virgin money are claiming increased costs has made them change the offer, why dont they introduce a new "platinum/diamond etc" card with higher annual fee but offers the old 2-4-1 deal and also higher points earn? I know id ditch all my platinum amex and put all my spending exclusively on a card like that.

I too will reconsider my Virgin Platinum Card. I don't use or buy saver fares, only flexi and business even when I am not using 2 for 1. I have just renewed so will assess what other options there are out there. Surely the people with Platinum cards who are generally higher spenders should have access to Flexi and Business fares. Very disappointing enhancement!

I received an email from Starthere promoting the Virgin Flyer yesterday which indicates that the 30 day advance purchase policy applies now for new cards...
I was contemplating having my wife sign up for this card to book a few more 2-for-1 Flexis before 1 December... but now I'm not sure. It still links to the same T&Cs that started this thread.

Notice how they've dropped the 'complimentary' flight lingo (it's now just 'reduced')...I think this will be a big issue for their marketing.

Completely agree. The virginmoney.com.au website now reflects the same messaging for new sign ups.

Some photos of a Virgin Money ad advertising the card on the on-board magazine. Same deal with reduced and noting 'saver' fares.

VM have been an absolute PITA to deal with anyway. My card and my wifes card will go and perhaps my old arch enemy (AMEX) with their 50k points bonus just might get a start. The 241 deal WAS the card......it was pointless for anything else.

So who has actually gone and cancelled their VM card as a result of this? I had the pleasurable experience a few weeks back of dealing with VM when closing this - as expected they don't give a toss and it is too bad, so sad.

Till we meet next time Citi. I sure won't be missing the PITA that is your online banking facility - SMS passcodes and on-screen keyboards for password entry, what is this - 1999??

These changes and the fact you needed a text message to simply view your latest transactions was the catalyst for me to cancel mine. Unlike every other card I have ever cancelled they didn't try to keep me on board at all. Should they have waived the annual fee I would have kept it but I think due to the massive amount of cancellations they must be getting they aren't keen to waive anything.

 yeah. How dare they try to keep your account secure! I think you'll find security in 1999 was just about non-existent. No doubt why key logging was so popular back then.
