Virgin Flyer 2-For-1

It's a domestic only offer.
As per the T&Cs, but I was informed by the GCC I could do a 241 to NZ. Mind you, I'm not convinced and the NZ fares I recently got we're absolute ball-tearers so I didn't bother to try!

Came across this thread looking for answers to another question and didn't realise the issues other people have had getting the offer! I have had the card for 3 years now and not once have ever had an issue with taxes or the fares. Have always been able to book the cheapest saver lite fares at the internet price plus credit card surcharge eg: SYD-BNE $89 for two plus $15.40 total for credit card, so total $104.40.

I have always 'fed' the reservation agent regardless of location (Philippines or BNE) and gotten exactly what I want. Usually tell them along the lines of:
- I would like to book a 2for1 fare
- XYZ to ABC on these dates
- looking at VA123 on saver lite for $89

Flew on my most recent 2for1 booking last night which was booked earlier in April, but use the offer every second month or so. Also always get SC and velocity points for both passengers and never been knocked back the second passenger's velocity number.

I do have a question though, for those that have used upgrades for the 2for1 fares, has anyone had success in applying only 1 complimentary fare upgrade to the booking? I would like to book the 2for1 and use 1 comp upgrade and points for the other. I understand that you must choose only 1 method of upgrade, but has anyone sweet talked an agent to splitting PNRs or other methods to get this done?

I can't help with different methods of upgrade etc, but I have certainly had a 2for1 booking split in the past, so that bit can be done. Once done, upgrades should be doable subject to fare bucket availability etc.

I did just have some recent success applying the comp upgrade to myself and points upgrade to my partner on a 241, no questions asked at all. Although probably worth noting I called up on a different day and spoke to a different agent.
I've been having no problems with the 241 over the last few years but like tm.smile I am pretty clear on leading the phone call and if offered a price I don't think sounds right have been known to let the phone drop out and call back the next day...funny what speaking to a second operator can achieve!

Is this 2 for 1 thing the one on the TV where it says you can get a seat on the same flight 4 times a year?

From what I've been reading here, as a single guy & solo traveler, this offer is useless to me (I do have the Virgin Money Flyer card) as the offer seems to be 2 for 1 on the same flight, not the 4 separate flights as the ad suggests.

Or do I have this completely wrong?

I think you have it slightly mixed up, its two for one in the sense that you get a second seat free on the same flight (just pay taxes) for a companion, it's not a free flight later in the year for yourself. You do get it four times (segments) per year which is what the add suggests. Not so much use if you are typically flying solo

I'll have to add "can fly you around the country" in my singles ad. LOL.

Thanks for confirming that the offer is basically useless as a solo traveler. Just what I thought based on the posts here - another thing AFF has taught me.

Yet another example of solo travellers getting screwed (pun not intended).

Well... "comfort seats" on VA earn points and status credits. It would probably be a long, drawn out call centre transaction but you could try to turn it into four 2-for-1 status credit earning flights each year.

Or I'll just tell them I need the extra seat for myself! The way the seatbelts on VA are (see the "Am I Getting Too Fat For My Seatbelt?" thread), I might just book the extra seat for me if I'm flying Y (I've just discovered the benefits of J).

Good thinking, 99!

I believe you do earn points on the second seat. Same price, extra room!

Significant negative change to this card from 1 December:

- no longer covers taxes for 2nd pax
- now saver lite and saver fares only - eliminating flexi to business upgrades.
- 30 days advance purchase, up from 21 days

updated t&c http://virginmoney.com.au/downloads/credit-cards/Buy_one_seat_get_one_free_Terms_and_Conditions.pdf

Edit: it is clear after rereading t&c this applies to bookings made after 1 December.
Awful! This deserves a thread of its own I think!
That it does - see here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ocity/virgin-flyer-2-1-significant-51870.html

I think it was Medhead who has already done this. Search back about a year and you'll likely find the posts, or others may remember which thread those posts were in (maybe it was 777, not sure now)

The Mrs and I are flying to Brisbane with another couple friend of ours.

We have 4 sectors remaining and probably won't use the card anymore due to the changes. Can I book a flexi for myself and my wife, and then a flexi for myself and a mate on the same flight? Following which, I will do a name change for my ticket with my mate, to his mrs.

That way we get 4 for 2? Or will the system not let me book two seperate tickets?
