Way off topic, I know.. though fits current discussion..

Compare the proximity of Queensland to the equator in relation to the majority of other countries (USA and Europe) which observe Daylight Saving. If Europe was in the Southern Hemisphere, nearly all of it would be south of Melbourne.




Consider this: if Cairns observed DST, sunrise in February would be as late as 7:15am... (keep in mind, that is still Summer!), which is worse than Sydney's latest winter sunrise of 7:01am. I for one don't want to be getting up in the dark during Summer. The further north or west you go in the state (e.g. Weipa or Mt Isa), the later sunrise becomes.

And obviously the solution is to move the arbitrary discontinuity in the timezone from the Tweed to further north.

More interest in Happy Hour also ....

But quickly checked 2014 longest BNE day will be Dec 14. Sun rise 4.59 AM - sun set 6.51 PM bearing in mind it is of course fairly light both before and after sun up / down.
Applying daylight saving ... light before 6AM until about 8PM for BNE ...the numbers naturally sliding for Cairns and more so Mt Isa.

No view for or against - just working to many hours period.

Bare in mind where the overwhelming majority of Queenslanders actually live. Sunrise in Brisbane, mid summer, is 4:45am and sunset is 6pm-ish. Maybe it's just me but a 6am sunrise and 7pm sunset seem a whole lot saner.

Bear in mind, the over whelming majority of Qlders don't want daylight savings........and I know someone will say that's not the case for SEQ. SEQ is skewed by the number of southern expats. Born and bred Qlders typically do not want DLS (with exceptions of course) even in SEQ. I've never understood the thought process of southerners who want to come to Qld for a lifestyle change, only to want to change it to exactly what they left behind????? The reality is, those morning hours are the best in the day. Why sleep through them or be forced off to work too early? Afternoons are often hot, humid and stormy and not the time of day people want to kick a ball around in like they do down south. Horses for courses I'd say.

Not typical.. just highlighting that Queensland is a large state, covering a vast area north to south and east to west, with a majority of the area in the Tropic zone, where daylight saving has no significant advantages compared to regions closer to the southern pole. In terms of distances, Brisbane to Cairns is similar to Brisbane to Melbourne, and then Cairns to Cape York is a greater distance than between Brisbane and Sydney again.

During summer, South East Qld suffers due to it's easterly aspect, more so than its north/south location... it juts out a long way east of the likes of Sydney and Melbourne, whose summer sunrise/set are impacted more due to their southerly aspect. Cairns, by comparison, is approximately in line with Longreach and Melbourne. Mt Isa is not far off being in line with Adelaide. Once again, I'm just highlighting how these issues impact the effectiveness of the benefits that Daylight Saving affords to those living in southern areas.

Daylight Saving may provide lifestyle benefits to those in southern states, while it may have the opposite effect in most areas of Qld: it has the potential to detrimentally impact lifestyle.

Most people start work ~9:00am. Some like me even later. I leave the office after 7:00pm most days. I can't do anything outside after work.

If the sun is up ~5:00-6:00 hours before I go to work that time is wasted. Yes I can start work earlier to compensate but that defeats the purpose as I would need to be in bed by 9:00pm-10:00pm every night. Places such as MEL are fantastic in summer with daylight until ~9:30pm.

Cairns is indicative of the situation in areas west or north of about Childers. But in any case cairns was not raised as typical of time in Queensland but to address the condescending put down about things being hotter. Whether people want to accept it or not. Daylight savings does change the naturally hottest part of the day to be later relative the the clock face.

Hardly surprising that you ignored the point about refusing to change lifestyle. The lifestyle in qld involves getting up early and doing outdoor things. All I see is a failure to adapt to the situation. Instead of demanding that everyone change to suit you. Go live in Melbourne if it is so great.

Hmm... maybe you're overreacting just a bit?

People who live, work in or visit Queensland are all going to have views about whether they prefer early starts or later evenings. They're entitled to. No one is "demanding that everyone change to suit you" just expressing differing views about what is desirable.

JohnK had a constant theme of attacking Queensland because it doesn't suit him. He has clearly stated a number of times that Queensland/Brisbane needs to change to match his expectations. As such I disagree with your assumption that the demand is not being made. Overreaction? I don't know, but the constant negativity deserve some reaction.

I would love to have worked in MEL instead of this boring place. Can you help me out with a job for the next 2-3 years.

Oh and not everyone is like you.. I am not going to get up early and do all the things I need to do and then head off to office for 9-10 hours of stressful work. I would rather leave the relaxation activities at the end the day after work. Much easier to have 18 holes of golf after work than attempt 18 holes of golf before work.

You have it a totally wrong. The Mediterranean gets hotter than Queensland in summer. Go and see how the locals live life there.
