Virgin stopped transfer of points to Krisflyer [resumed]

The other side is that SQ might have ceased the transfer as they didn't want stacks of points flowing in to KF and on the books as a liability.

Given we have no idea if or how much VA pays SQ for each point transferred, anything is possible.

When flying resumes the last thing they will want is point redemptions.

Well, I wasn't sure if this would happen, despite the flood of posts in recent weeks, but now my eyes are open.

Fortunately, I managed to board one of the life rafts early and have sailed my 900k Velocity points over to the warmer waters of Singapore, where they will reside until I can use them.

The new Q - how will KF handle their affairs? It might end up being a transfer from one leaking life boat > to another, that has less leaks, but is required to jettison just about everything to survive.

SQ will always be one of the safest global carriers, likewise KF.

I suspect KF will hike redemption rates tho.

Think I might book some long haul pointy end long hauls for late year NOW!

I would consider this, also, potentially aiming for early-mid 2021. However, we have no idea what re-entry requirements are going to be for returning Aussies next year. More than likely we will still be facing some form of quarantine procedure when returning home.

If SQ do hike up redemption costs, then it may still be cheaper to book the award now and just pay the change fee to move dates forward....and forward.

Yes that is my stategy as posted above. I suspect if we book NOW for November or so, the SQ bookings will be accepted. At the CURRENT award rates.

I'll choose ONLY SQ meta flights so that they are in control of what occurs if things go pear shaped.

If SQ are not flying November they'll advise that and will (in my view) OFFER "re-protected" forward dates, at no penalty fee. No matter what the NEW rates might be then. (Maybe double.)

That is my plan right now. So we will still get a few pointy end RT to Europe on SQ A380s for Virgin points that will barely buy a toaster right now if we had left them be! :D

Velocity Platinum Status extended an extra year, so no need to take paid Virgin flights to re-qualify. So next 12 months a great time to burn some free flights.

Just a watch out for those with points now stuck in Velocity due to the KrisFlyer shut down, in addition to restricting gift voucher purchases they are now marking several vouchers as ‘out of stock’ which is hard to believe since they can be electronically generated....

Keep an eye on this!

Aren't they all physical cards on the velocity store

The good news is, for just a mere 115,000 Velocity points, you can still (well as I type) get a pair of ugly boots! :D

Who needs overseas pointy end travel?

Darm .. no ugly jackeroo boots for 115,000? :D

However the GOOD news is I saw a Dyson fan for a measly 181,000 - they still in business?

"14 day deivery time" - what could possibly go wrong?

Behind the scenes, at least some of the cards are prepurchased, which gives them a stock level.

I still have 60K VFF points coming from my Velocity Visa over the next few months, so I guess they'll be stranded on RMS Virg-tanic until someone comes to the rescue (or we get more life rafts from Singapore).

Best case - Virgin survives and I can put them to use in the new world. Worst case - they go down the tube and I ask Virgin Money for a refund of my annual fee.

I’ve taken this approach but PURCHASED the points using VA points. Given my gold STATUS I assume that SQ will honor any issues that could be foreseen if SQ go under.

The way I see it - I got 1 RT to Europe for 280k points in J vs a single one way J (if booked with KF) to Europe for the same points. Yes there’s a risk it may not work, but in the end I had forgotten about these points anyway, they are a drop in the ocean compared to what’s sitting in AMEX.

tldr; I’m gambling these points as I have enough to spare.

please explain ... when you say purchased SQ using VA points what does that mean?

Just a standard SQ redemption using VA points (I.e the VA booking engine). Yes there’s a risk if VA go bust SQ may not honor the tickets - but I have my doubts given how good SQ have been to me over last few years.
