Virgin stopped transfer of points to Krisflyer [resumed]

I'm not sure I had seen this thread before today so I'm one of the dummies that missed the boat.

There are always rumours flying around but didn't think Virgin would cave in this quickly. I've got ~203,000 Velocity points that are now useless. I didn't really want to shift them to SQ as they have their own issues and I'm not sure things will get back to normal as quickly as people think.

"Told you so" is not a good look on AFF. And yes hindsight is a wonderful thing. Lets hope sanity prevails and Liverpool is crowned Premier League champions and travel can become a common thing again when this virus is under control.

I think some of it was that any belief that 'normal' would return any time soon evaporated when the govt gave an underwriting of 8 weeks of flying. Probably went crunching numbers and concluded 'where not gonna make it'. So best to call it sooner rather than later.

When I decided to cancel my daughters flights to SYD for the weekend of 21-22 March I still thought our Easter family trip would go ahead. It was only a few days later that I realised the trip may not go ahead.

I didn't for one minute think the airlines would try to keep the money for services not delivered. And I still have not done anything refarding the cancelled JQ flights. At the same time I didn't think VA would cave in this quickly. Queensland came up with some sort offer if help. Where are the other states?

Also I don't think SQ is that safe a proposition. I also think that we won't see multi destination travel for quite some time. If you want to travel it will be point to point travel with some period of forced quarantine.

We may never be the same again after this crisis.

it doesn’t really matter now anyway JohnK and it wasn’t even this thread, AFF was tipped off the other monster VA thread by some people very close to the action - but even then, people decided to wait it out and hope for the best - so there are people who were told and still are in the same boat.

My point being what’s done is done now and there’s still a great chance a new VA will emerge anyway it’s not the end!

I missed it too :( What with COVID and supporting my husband fighting cancer, I haven't really been on here much and this completely escaped me. 252k points in my account - at least it wasn't 750k anymore, we burned through tonnes about 18 months ago.

Very sad to hear the news, all those thousands of people who will now be out of work.

Very grateful now that I didn't jump ship from my current employer over to Virgin when they were looking for a backoffice position last year that I'd have been perfect for.

I never thought it would come to this, well not this quickly anyway.

Don't despair - it's not over yet - voluntary administration does not mean it's the end of the end - it's chance to "restructure" debt then maybe one of the current major shareholders will take a controlling stake or whatever .... I guess; however, the emerging airline will be different - probably with less staff (I also feel for the staff who have just had more uncertainty piled on them in these trying and uncertain times). Don't forget Virgin was a financial basket case even before the CV crisis. Who knows if the Virgin brand and/or the Velocity program will also emerge as part of the "new" airline.

(BTW - I and Mr LL also stand to lose 1000's of velocity points and a couple of future (paid) bookings. But I also figure that many FF programs will be significantly devalued in some way post crisis.)

What a waste of points -
I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Virgin Australia is being rebuilt and the Velocity points will probably be exchangeable for something worthwhile - we just don't know what. It is unlikely to be as good for me as the SQ transfers, but it is looking better than it did in April.

damn, so people feel it will never happen? I had hoped it was just a temporary closure while they go through the processes. Its really the only way i used velocity points :(. I should have transferred everything across when i had the chance.

The general feeling is it is highly unlikely to return anytime soon because of the fact it was a one way cash drain on VA1..... perhaps it will return with a poorer redemption rate? Who really knows...

Since I mainly fly to the Asia region, and hardly ever to the Americas, I presume the next best option is to use velocity points to purchase flights on other airlines that fly to asia? Not as good as transferring it but still possibly method to use the points. Or just save them for domestic travel i guess...

There are no options for using the points on routes to Asia at the moment. The AC tie-up may offer options to Canada and then onwards through the AC network but who knows? We can't travel anyway right now so this is an opportunity to wait and see. Like others, I values the option to get SQ premium cabins and the *A network - but whatever we are left with, it's got to be better than toasters, right?

oh really? Damn i thought i read a recent article saying that we cant transfer points to singapore / krisflyer but we can still use velocity to purchase seats on singapore. Bummer. I am not a big fan of AC, every time i have flown them i have been disappointed. (Only ever flew them economy)
